Just wondering about the toughness of the Fenix 5. I'm not going into the glass durability between the mineral and the sapphire versions, as this was debated heavily. I am talking about dropping the watch or hitting it on something, and what would happen to the innards, if it can be easily damaged. Anyone had any drop related happenings?
I got run over by a car when cycling and broke my wrist when the tire went over it, the Watch besides some minor scratches was fine. Might have been lucky but the watch looks rock solid to me and I would not be afraid to throw it of a building.
So far my experience is that the watch is pretty solid. The softest part are the screws around the bezel. You will scratch those on the 5 before you scratch the bezel or the glass if you have a sapphire version. The outer edge of the screw sticks out just a tiny bit higher than the bezel and in my case the black anodizing has taken a hit. I could probably replace those screws if i could bug Garmin for a few spares, but I'm not that worried about it.
Otherwise the watch is solid. I'm not easy on equipment. This watch is a tool. It is a tool I'll treat well and I'd like it to look nice, but it will end up in harms way quite often. I expect it to easily last the life of the internal battery as that is probably the limiting factor. One really great thing there is that the battery life is awesome, so the battery will not see tons of charge/discharge cycles in a year.
