I'm based in the EU but travel to the US frequently so I'm thinking of picking up a 5X whilst there. Will I be able to erase the US topo maps, and load the Garmin EU maps. I'm assuming the devices are identical aside from the maps. Thanks
The fenix 5X has 16 GB of memory for mapping. The TOPO US 100K maps that come preloaded on the watch take up about 3 GB of memory and the cycling maps taking at least another 2 GB. The preloaded maps can be removed, but if you decide to replace them you will either need to buy the maps again or send the watch in for an RMA replacement.
You really have to pay again for these maps, if you remove them? Why? I think I have removed both preinstalled garmin osm maps and have installed the cycle map again without probs. I will delete it tomorrow again and have a look (I don't need them), what happens, if I try to install it again.
So why is the user not able to take a back up of these map, remove them and reinstall them later again. Really strange procedure...!!!
Alright thanks. From the reply of the admin, I gather I'd need to purchase the EU maps.
Also, I appreciate the maps have some sort of DRM. However, if a user has purchased the maps (by purchasing the watch), they should be able to delete and reinstall the maps at will. Just as I may delete and later download a book on my Kindle or an album on my iPhone free of charge.
BUT I can re-install the EU map via Garmin Express.
Thanks for clarifying, very helpful. I suppose I would need to purchase the EU maps if I were to buy the watch in the US, but that makes sense. There are better EU maps available anyway as far as I know, which also include topo unlike Garmin's EU maps.
My fenix 5X is the Asian version on the Asian version I seem to be able to choose maps from any continent in the world trough Garmin Express. So it seems the Asian version is the best one to buy?:cool:
The maps that are preloaded on the fenix 5X are copy protected as required by the company that supplies our mapping.
Ok, deleted my garmin cycle map and can't reload/add it usable again - but no loss for me at all. There are many other osm based maps with better quality.
