VO2max weirdness???

Hi,

I've just updated to a Fenix 5X from a 735XT, in general I'm very happy with my new HRM but...

1. I mostly run with my red heart rate strap, just because it gives me a bunch of extra data... so I guess that I should have a solid measurement of my heart rate and subsequently VO2max, yet; Immediately upon switching my VO2max dropped from 48 to 44 once the new watch started updating my numbers. It keeps bouncing between 44 and 43 BUT for example today my watch reported 45 when I was done with my run and yet Garmin Connect says 44, so it's one off and it has been so but with different numbers since I've got it i.e. the watch and GC not reporting the same number???

2. I have more than five years of training data in GC, why does every new watch I get re-learn VO2MAX from the beginning? It should just be able to sync from GC and go from there? Even if the new watch has a better algorithm or something, why doesn't it start from the known point and then adjust?

3. I wear my 5X 24/7 getting sleep data and steps and what have you... so the watch knows my resting heart rate - why doesn't it automatically update and reset my heart rate zones based on my resting heart rate in GC and then sync? It seems like the simplest thing to fix?

4. I can't for the life of me find my VO2MAX in the menus of the watch once I've saved my latest activity. One would think it'd be an readily available widget and if not that at least findable in the menus but alas no - the only place I can find it is in GC on the phone?

kind regards Mike
  • 1. I had some similar oddness on the beta firmware
    2. I completely agree with you here. No reason for the calculations to be done only on the watch. The data is in Garmin Connect and it would make sense for the calculation to live there as the watch is eventually going to be replaced.
    3. My RHR is always resetting to blank no matter what I put in this field.
    4. The performance status widget has that info. Click the start button on it and flip through the pages.
  • Oh, that's where it was! Kind of makes sense I guess :) Thank you for teaching me about that! And yes, that one says 45 although GC still says 44 ;)

    Thank you!
