Speed/Cadence Sensor Never Connected for Bike Leg of Triathlon

I did my first Triathlon last weekend and for some reason my speed/cadence sensor never connected when I started the bike leg. I've never had any issues with it before, but I've always either done just bike or multi-sport that began with bike... so I'm wondering if it has something to do with the bike not starting until 20 minutes or so into the track. Does it maybe start looking for the speed/cadence sensor while I'm swimming and then time out at some point and stop looking?

I can't imagine this is "normal" behavior right?

It was my first time so I don't know if this was a one-time fluke or if this is something that will happen to me every time. Just wondering if this is something other people have experienced and if there is any kind of fix for it (I tried looking for ways to re-scan during the ride but didn't find any).

Thanks.
  • In terms of re-scanning, holding the Down button will give access to the clockface/widgets. From there you can hold the Up button to access Settings> Sensors and Accessories. When you are done, pressing the Start button will take you back to the activity screen (which will still have been running in the background).

That is if you want to scan for new devices. I was hoping there was some kind of button to manually tell it to look again for known devices.

You might be able to force a connection by going into the sensor menu, selecting the sensor and selecting "connect"

Once connected, just leave this setting alone and the watch will always be looking for these sensors and should reconnect when they are available. I had my first ride with speed and cadence sensors last night. I had paired them to the watch hours earlier in the garage. When we started the ride, a spin of the wheel and a few rotations of the crank woke up the sensors and they attached to my Fenix very quickly while it was acquiring a GPS fix. Same process as my heart rate strap. Just don't ever disconnect the sensors manually from the sensor menu on the watch and it should reconnect when the sensor is in range and broadcasting.

Hmmm... never noticed that the existing known sensors were at the bottom of the menu. Maybe that would've worked.

Yea in the past, they've always just connected automatically as soon as the wheel spins a couple times. I did a bike last night and they connected automatically. It was just during the Tri that they didn't work, so I was suspecting it "stopped looking" after a while for some reason. Hopefully it never happens again, but if it does I'll have to try the manual reconnect.

  • Hello,

I had the same problem on my last two triathlons. No connection to the speed/cadence sensor nor the stage powermeter. Both connects just fine when starting a bike activity alone. Something wrong definitely and no way to push buttons to force connections during a sprint triathlon. Anyone having power data on bike leg?

Interesting. Good to know it's not just me. Although I was hoping it was just a fluke.
  • Hello,

Just to report that on my last Triathlon on Sunday, the speed sensor and the pwoermeter did connect. The only change in setting was the change of connection between PM and F5,( before on bluetooth, now on ant+). Still don't what happened.
