MyWatch Partial Solution

I've been experimenting with settings trying to get the MyWatch watch face working without crashing which requires a delete and reinstall. What I've found is that if you install the watch face via computer using Garmin Express, but DO NOT use the Garmin mobile application, the watch face seems to be stable. I've run it for over a week without a crash. Of course you can't get any notifications or run any apps that require a connection to a phone, but it does wor for me. If someone out there could beta test this setup perhaps we could get confirmation that this does work. Of course it's not good to have no Garmin mobile, and the developer has quit developing for the Fenix 5X, but maybe the underlying watch face is okay and a Garmin firmware upodate will someday allow us to actually use the mobile application. Thank you all for testing.

Does it remain stable after getting a GPS lock and allowing the sunrise/sunset graph to populate? I've been able to keep mine stable (minus settings reset) by just not ever allowing it to get a GPS lock, though I'd really like the sun data.

Yes everything works except mobile connections to your phone. I've tried switching watch faces, loading maps, changing watch face settings (via laptop connection only) and everything works fine. As soon as I connect the watch to either my Android or iPhone via the Garmin Connect Mobile, it soon crashes. So the issue of the crashing watch faces (not just MyWatch) seems to be related to the way the watch connects to a phone via the Garmin Mobile Connect. Please try it and let us know if you have the same result. By the way, there are a few watch faces that require regular communication with a phone to fully function (Line for example). Under the scenario I describe those watch faces obviously won't be fully functional. However MyWatc and Gearmin work fine. Thank you for responding! Hopefully we'll help the development team get our 5X fully functional.
  • This issue has been looked into, and the problem lies in old coding of the watch face app. Attempts have been made to contact the developer regarding this issue. Until the developer releases an update for this watch face, it will continue to break when it syncs with the Connect Mobile app.

That's fine but MYWatch isn't the only watch face having this issue. Do they all need to be re-coded? Gearmin is another popular watch face that seems to suffer the same issue for example.

Since the original developer has stopped updating, is there a way to extract the MyWatch code so that another developer might pick up the effort, or might Garmin realease a functioning version?
  • You could submit a request for the reworking of the MyWatch watch face through the Connect IQ Developer's forum at https://forums.garmin.com/forum/developers/connect-iq.

What do you mean by that? The code isn't publicly shared. Is there a protocol by which Garmin will sequester the source code of an abandoned application so that another developer may resume work on it?

Also, do you mean that the technical details of the solution are already known?
  • There is a sub forum there to suggest Ideas for CIQ apps. Post a picture of the watch face there, as someone may already have done one that's very similar, or someone may be willing to write one that's very similar. I'm willing to guess there's probably something similar in the store already.

The only thing I've seen that's even remotely similar is your watch face, Simple Graph. I did post a request/question in the devleoper's forum. Is there no way to extract the code from the existing watch face? Is it encrypted?

It's compiled code. Seems MyWatch was updated within the last 60 days and the developer talks about fixing things for the 5x in the app store description. Do you know he abandoned it? Maybe he's just busy with other stuff...
