Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan
  • Hello, I have a Fenix5 sapphire.
What I notice is that during the day the battery drain is ok (0,2 or less per hour), while during night the drain is way larger, more than 0,5% per hour.
Also other two friends with same watch notice the same behave, during the day the battery drops for few % (up to 3), while during the night in 8h drops by 5-6%.
    And this happen every night.
firmware 12.50 for all the watches. I will check now with the 13:00, I just got it.

    Hi, I have a Fenix5.
I have the same battery's problem. I bought my watch the last june. The battery dropped well, i had connected BTS, HR, a watch face with seconds, HRM on the chest ANT+ , GPS normal mode ,notifications and i ran 4 or 5 times every week. But the last weeks the battery drops too much. I have disconnected some funcionallities, and i have reconfigured others. But it is still the same. Before, I recharged fully the battery every 10 days usually. Now, I must recharge every 5 or 6 days, it depends the my activity.
I have updated automatic all firmware's version but the problem has worse.
The last sunday, i have updated to firmware 13.00. But the battery drop is similar. I have observed that when the battery's porcentage is low, it drops more faster than battery's porcentage is full or high. I don't know the reason. Actually, I have the watch without BTS, notifications, backlight only 8 sec and brightlight 20%- Only when i run, I active ANT+, GPS and BTS when I finish.
I wait yours experiences with the firmware new version.
    Thanks
  • Hi, I have Fenix 5 (5Q10xxxxx).
Yesterday I have updated automatic all firmware's version 13.00 but the problem has worse.
  • Hi all.
Can anyone send me a link, where I can find v12.40? I think it was the best for battery consumption and GPS accuracy.
V 13 not only did not fix battery consumption (it is much worse) but also ruined GPS accuracy. Especially, while running, current pace with v13 is so bad, that makes the watch nonfunctional.
I run on 05:30 pace / per km and F5 shows 06:30 - 07:15...... After that, watch seems to realize the fault, tries to correct and shows I run on 04:00 pace. The total time per km seems correct, but this behavior makes watch nonfunctional especially for interval training.
  • Here you can find all the firm:
    http://gawisp.com/perry/fenix_D2_tactix/

After receive a refurbished, when the battery consumption was massive, I updated the watch I got from 8 to 12.21, and do not update since that. The result is that battery last for over 25 days as watch, with bluetooth and notifications enabled, what is a performance like when I bought it.

I would say that if your country do not agree for the rma, contact with garmin in the international site, so they may give you a hand.

Thank you very much for your help.
How was the external appearance of the watch? are there any signes (scratches) that show the fact that the watch is refubrished?
  • It came in a bubble bag, no sign of use at all. like unboxed.

  • If you are experiencing rapid battery drain, where your watch is only lasting a few days, first verify on latest software version. If you are using any third-party Connect IQ watch faces, try changing to a default watch face. Some developers use an outdated version of CIQ which could cause the drain.

If you still encounter problems, then you should contact your local Garmin Service Team so that we can work with you directly.
