Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan

    Hi Everyone,

it seems ....problem is last series of F5. I tested 2 pcs of 5Q XXX series..... both was on 15-20 % per day. I bought new old stock F5 (cca. 1 Y ) . The "old" one is on 3% per day in watch mode. I guess something is wrong in 5Q series

Not sure if it helps... I recently had a "54H" serial F5 and I last charged it on the 22nd Dec and as of today (4th Jan) it was on 38% in watch mode.

I say had... As I had to return it to Garmin for a different issue. I hope my replacement is not a "Q"...
  • Hi,
I have a 5Q series from Christmas...No issue there with last beta 12.51 // around 5-6% per day. and 5% for 1h trail with GPS+Galileo... (i use the garmin watch faces)
  • I had two gray F5s bought at black friday on amaz ** german. Both had battery problems (30% per day). It was not 5Q ... I tried everything, nothing solved the problem. I sent them away and asked for a refund. I bought another silver version on the same site but in France. I received a 5Q series but the battery looks OK ... the battery loses 5% / h in activity and about 8% / days in standby.
  • Mine is 5A**** serial number and also has problem.
  • I just opened a new thread for this bug, without noticing that people is talking about in in this thread.
This issue is very frustrating to me. I don't want to return the unit, but this battery life is just not acceptable.
By any chance, is there someone who knows if this issue is actually being investigated by Garmin, or since the F5 Plus is on the market, older models are no more taken care of?
  • pistapoci some users are having varying results by re-calibrating the battery indicator (full discharge/recharge). Although this will slightly decrease the overall life of the battery, it could be a fix, but not everyone is having success. Seems those that have contacted Garmin on this, they are replacing the watch under warranty, also with varying success. My suggestion, if you don't want to do the re-calibration, is to call Garmin support, find out if they are aware of the issue and have them add you to the case number. Unfortunately, there is no consistency in what works and what doesn't work at this time.
  • seilogramp I just wrote about my experience with Garmin Support in the thread I opened today in this forum section, you can read about it.
Recalibrating does not seem to be the solution to this issue, nor the hard reset seems to fix anything, so I and not convinced to try since even Support is telling me that I have to wait.
I come from a Polar device, which had some glitches but overall was ok. I thought that by switching to a Garmin I was making a step forward but now I'm not so sure anymore
  • (For the reccord I currently have the 53A*****, and my previous watch was also a 53A****)

I have also used the device until it is out of battery, and charge is a few more hours than nessecary in case of bad "charge calibration")
  • pistapoci yes, thanks for pointing me to your other thread. Occasionally I read here about non-USA based Garmin support that is not exactly supportive. As you see on this thread, Garmin is for the most part replacing the devices without a hassle. Even then, the new devices may or may not have the same issue. :(
