Yeah, that would be pretty amazing if possible and I don't see a reason why not! Sadly, I don't see Garmin focussing enough on the 5X, which is a shame.

You can always look at the map, estimate your elevation based on your relative position between contour lines, and then manually calibrate the altimeter. If you try you will see it is much less accurate than getting a GPS fix unless you are on a fixed point like a summit with known altitude.
My experience is that that given a good fix at the start of an activity (where altimeter calibration occurs) I am usually within a couple of metres of the correct altitude unless weather conditions have changed dramatically. In these conditions I might be tempted to re-calibrate - either manually by entering a know height or via GPS.
