Altimeter - continous calibration

how is this handled on F5X? Any different to the other versions (5, 5S, 935) or is there also only "calibrate at GPS start"? I was very disappointed when i saw that continous calibration is missing while even Fenix 1 had this feature. Did anybody get feedback from Garmin if this is something they are working on? I am thinking about keeping the F1 for some more time.
  • The calibration requires a GPS signal so it does calibration at activity start or by manual request (at any time). I think it would be annoying if in the middle of activity it recalibrated because it would confuse any cumulative elevation gain.

If you don't want to rely on the barometer to detect changes but only use the GPS then there is a data field called "GPS Elevation" you can use.

??? The algorithm of the continous calibration is complicated. From 2001 I am using Garmin receivers with the barometer (at present Oregon600T). The continous calibration is acting very well. It's too bad that it is missing in F5X

It depends on what is important to you. During an running activity I am interested in relative elevation so that I can assess the total elevation gained or lost during a run - this impacts workout effort. Wouldn't step changes in elevation caused by an automatic recalibration distort this?

In situations where knowing your absolute altitude, like hiking, is important then perhaps continuous calibration is prefered but the GPS accuracy of the fenix 5x is way poorer than a hand held device and hence any GPS based continuous calibration is going to poorer.

  • Hi
I have created a similar thread in the F5 forum, asking people to email Garmin so that they add continuous calibration
    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s/157554-
The more requests they receive, the more likely to add it
Personally, during hiking, the barometric altimeter drifts a lot

The real problem here is that while manual calibration to a known value is an excellent solution, it's way unpractical because you have to press 30 buttons as fast as you can (if you're doing an activity or switching from one activity to the other, which in case first activity is swimming is a nightmare believe me). I agree GPS calib is not viable for users who are in troubled GPS areas and shortcut to calib to known value is the least we can have.

However, Garmin has built a very powerful watch whose software capabilities are vastly unexplored. If we could use the POIs elevation and have the watch autocalibrate upon reaching the POI, this would be THE solution. This is how the autocalibration should work IMO.
