Some settings and alarms being lost - please help!

I got my new Fenix 5X yesterday, an upgrade from my Fenix 3 Sapphire (not the HR version). I have done all the updates and started to customise some of the settings however I am finding that it is not remembering some of the settings and any of the alarms I set and I am finding that they are lost within an hour or so. So far the settings I have noticed that are not remembered are the sound settings for key tones, Alert tones and Key vibe. I have turned the watch off and restarted it but that makes no difference. I have found that it is sometimes (possibly always) caused when it syncs with Garmin Connect on my phone.

Can anyone help? I didn?t get this with the Fenix 3 and it is very frustrating especially the alarms!

Thanks.

  • Do some combing through tons of previous threads and you'll see the last 6 months worth of frustration from everybody over the syncing process with garmin connect mobile. Basically it doesn't matter what you select as far as settings on your watch if they don't match what you have set on garmin connect/garmin connect mobile. Every time your watch syncs, the settings/alarms/etc will be overridden by your selections on garmin connect. Long story short, everyone has complained about it (rightfully so, myself included) and through 3 or 4 FW updates/betas garmin has chosen to do nothing about it. Basically just have to live with it

If someone installed an overhead light controlled through a wall switch I wouldn't 't accept having to screw/unscrew it and every time i wanted to turn it on/off - even if it did it's primary function of providing light. At a $700 price point for a watch a customer shouldn't have to wait 6 months to have it work as it should. Hint to Garmin::: Customer first.

OK thanks for the responses. This was the conclusion I had come to. I had done some searches but hadn't come up with anything (my search ability I guess). At least I know it isn't an issue with the watch although it is unacceptable. I do hope they fix this soon! When I spoke to Garmin yesterday they said it wasn't a known issue!!!

    Thanks again for everyone's help.
  • I agree!

And I got the following in an email from Garmin today about the issue...

"Regarding the Garmin connect settings, anything implemented in Garmin Connect will override any settings changed on the watch. I'm afraid it doesn't work both ways."

I think Garmin are going downhill. :(

  • I've been arguing that WHEREVER you make the change should override the others.. IE a change made on the watch would update the settings on GCM, and visa versa. I had no problem with my Fenix 3 doing so...

  • Exactly!!! Why would they think it should work any other way? After all why would the ability to change the settings and add alarms etc be on the watch in the first place if it is just overwritten by Garmin Connect???

I had no issues with the Fenix 3 either.

I know it is possible to work round the issue but it is not acceptable.

  • So the latest problem I have found related to this issue is with the temperature units setting. I set it to Celsius on the watch and it reverts back to Fahrenheit and the problem is I can't find where that is set on Garmin Connect! This really is a very frustrating issue. This is something Garmin must take note of and fix. How do we get them to listen?

Even the Fenix 3 is not immune to this Garmin Connect induced intense annoyance as of the last couple of days https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-3/1228777-measurement-units-issue

As Crispin says, it's an issue with the Fenix 3 as well, and I've also confirmed it on the Vivoactive HR. The relevant setting in Garmin Connect is Units in the Device Setting; the only options are Miles and Km, and whichever you pick completely overrides the watch settings and changes them all to default values for the statute or metric options. Which completely defeats the point of having individual settings on the watch. Connect internally for activity display has three options - Statute, Metric and Statute UK, which is distance in miles, temperature in Celsius and elevation in metres. If they'd even add that as an option, it would be better; but it'd be better still if the site actually supported all the possible watch options, or just left the watch alone.

To my mind, this is worse than the alarm issue, because at least there is a way to get the watch to do what you want with the alarms, even if it's a real nuisance to do.
