It all ready seems stupid that Garmin Express cant connect with the watch by wlan, hey I paid a lot of extra money to have the watch with wlan. But also if I pair it by Bluetooth with my PC it cant be found. Come on, what were you thinking?
It does sync by wlan if I'm home, but thats just the activities, no updates. Dont want to use the cable to push the updates and dont want to use the slow bluethooth either.
There is a way to do it. Add your mobile phone's wifi hotspot to your wifi list in Garmin Express. Once away from home you can always sync over your mobile hotspot. It is much faster than Bluetooth sync, assuming you have a good cellular reception.

actually it does sync updates as well via wifi, at least it does on my FR935, the only problem is it won't prompt you that it has sync the update and you have to manually go into your settings->system->software update and select the install update from there...

This only works for firmware updates but not for watch faces and the other stuff..
