Unistall unused maps

It's possible uninstall maps that are not being used by freeing up space and do not always appear among the updates ? I'm in Europe and i'm not interested in North America or Asia maps, for example... Thanks.
  • Maps on the 5X are just like maps on most other Garmin devices, and that is .img files in the \Garmin\ folder.

Use JaVaWa Device Manager to figure out which maps are which and remove them from the 5X. Copy both the .img file and the other file matching the name of the map, but with a different extension. Sorry for being vague on the other file, but I don't recall the extension offhand.
  • Don't worry you have been very exahustive, thanks a lot ! ;)
  • I discussed this with Garmin support asking if I backup the deleted maps, if it is possible to install them back later on. They said it would not be guaranteed and if not, you need to buy them if you need them. My question would be, if you tried to put them back and if it worked :)

The most important thing you can do before starting anything like this on a Garmin device that you may want to put back to factory clean state is, backup.
    • Connect to your computer
    • Browse the drive the 5X/Oregon/etc... makes
    • Select the Garmin directory
    • Copy the Garmin directory to your computer
    • Zip up that copied directory and store it away for safe keeping
As mentioned previously, the maps will be files with the extension ".img". If, for example, you want to remove gmapsupp.img, also remove the corresponding gmapsupp.<ext>. Note: "<.ext> is not literally the extension. It's something like .ver or .sum...I don't recall offhand, unfortunately. Without that file, the map won't work. Copy it. Back it up. Keep it safe.

To answer the question, yes I did wipe out my 5X by deleting the contents of the Garmin directory, then put back what I wanted. Also did the same on my Oregon 700. I backed up beforehand though. :)
