Training Status Unavailable - for months

I've had my F5 for months now and still have no training status. I had it for a week or so, but it's been showing 'no status' for over a month now. I train daily, but i'm not a runner so I only did 2-3 obligatory outdoor runs to get VO2MAX and such going. I ride, lift, cardio, snowboard, golf, etc, etc. I have at least 1 activity every day. My Training Load is 'optimal'. Must I run outdoors weekly to maintain this status? Or is this a bug?

Do you run with an external hrm chest strap? I think you need it

Pretty sure you need to run or cycle on a regular basis in order to get a training status because it's based on how your V02max is improving (or getting worse) over time in response to your training regime. So if you only did it at the start you only have a baseline to work out training load etc. but no data to show if you're training is improving your V02max or not.
Not every activity needs to be one that generates V02max information but yeah at least once every couple of weeks you should get a 20-30 minute run in with a chest strap.

No, you don't need the HRM strap for this - the onboard OHR does fine.

The only things you need a strap for is HRV Stress, and a Guided Lactate Threshold Heart Rate Test.

You need to do some sort of activity that will allow a measurement of your VO2max. The F5 determines the effectiveness of your training by tracking and comparing your VO2max over time. If it can't measure VO2max, then it can't tell if you are being productive, maintaining, detraining, etc. I had the same problem due to moving my runs inside onto the treadmill. Training Status called me unproductive for weeks. I did one easy outdoor run, it measured my VO2max, and I went right back to productive.
  • Ok, thanks all. So to summarize, you can't get training status without VO2Max. The only way to get this is to run outdoors or to cycle with an expensive power meter. Bummer. I guess my training status will be unknown for eternity.....lol. at least there is training load to help guide me!

I'm a surfski paddler, not a runner, but I use the running app every so often to update my training status. Once the activity is uploaded onto Garmin Connect it is easy enough to edit the workout type to whatever you want.
