TBT notification on F5

I used F3 for more than 2 years now, and I use the f3 for navigation very often. I plan my course on www.gpsies.com, also include my own tbt notification (water, refresh station, top of the hill, turn warnings etc.). After export from the webpage to TCX I use the TCXtoFIT converter from Runningbadger to convert the TCX to FIT file. This FIT I put to the Newfiles folder on the watch (www.gpsies.com ->TCX export -> TCXtoFIT converter -> FIT file to watch). And everything is working fantastic.

I have a question, if you create such FIT file and upload it to the F5, are the tbt notification working in case you select navigation on selected course?

Thank you for your answer.
  • I did play a lot with courses with cuepoints this weekend including mentioned approach and never get proper turn-by-turn navigation in the Fenix 5S which I saw on some videos of Fenix 3.

It seems that everytime during route import Fenix 5 create virtual waypoints numbered 001,002... along the route (not only on corners, every few tens of meters) and then navigate to these waipoints. These are not visible on map a watches shows only distance to next such waypoint and vibrate aprox 20 meter before and on waypoint. Also it will not show any next direction (apart that small red arrow following route itself ofcourse) nor the name of such waypoint. This is extremely annoing.

I found that I can get rid of these useles navigation notifications when creating route in oposite direction and then navigate to route via trackback function. Also these notifications are showing on both navigation modes available in watches.

Unfortunately I wasnt able to make use of predefined cue points provided in FIT or other file formats with routes. Was samebody more successful?
  • Yes, the gpsies, own TBT to tcx > convert to fit does do exactly as F3.
  • Could you please share fit or original tcx file with some route with TBT? Did you tried 5 or 5s models also? 5X can behave differently in this.. It is so strange for me, that I followed exact same steps and didnt get tbt navigation (and even didnt find any proof that it is reallu working on 5/5S.)

EDIT: ok, now it seems I successed for some unknow reason, but cant test it properly now. So sorry for not believing. I will make another try in the field tomorrow.
  • I've a 5x, but my mistake from the beginning was to not put the waypoints exactly on the line in GPSies all the times.

Another thing is that when you save to tcx, gpsies moves the waypoints to nearest GPS point you draw. If you would like the waypoints 30 m before a crossing, you also need to put a GPS point there.
  • Good, so it is possible. Shame that it is almost unusable in real-life thanks to lack of reasonable easy import process. At least without neccessity to connect watch to pc via cable.

EDIT: I wonder what all icons Fenix can show on screen apart simple left or right.. Are they listed somewhere?ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1236279.jpg
  • I just bought a fenix 5 and based on the previous posts I tried to create a course with waypoints to have TBT guiding.
I used the same method as described in the first post and I have to say that I partially succeeded but unfortunately it's pretty useless at that moment !
When I arrive at a waypoint I have first the black bottom screen "pop-up" appearing with a number in it (pict. 1) and a little bit later the pop-up comes again with nothing inside (pict. 2) - just black !
I don't know why and what for the first one appears but I suppose the second one has to have the direction arrow in it but it doesn't !!!
I tried different courses at different locations with the same results..
Any help will be much appreciated.

  • You first get a prewarning of the waypoint. It's a number and the symbol for the waypoint type you selected. If waypoints not to close to each other I get around 50 m before. So usually my number is around 50.
I have Routing activity type=Hiking. Maybe that matters. I don't really know, but I think it could be different if you chose cycling.
Then I get a notification of with only the symbol when I pass the waypoint.

Did you chose a waypoint type in GPSies?
  • Thanks for your answer.
Ok, I understand now the meaning of the first warning with the number in it.. So, I actually got the number with the prewarning but without the symbol and no symbol with the warning itself (as you can see in the pictures from my previous post) !
In fact everything is working as it should except there is no symbol at all !!! Very strange.

I tried this with the Hiking activity and chose waypoint type in GPSies - Turn right, Turn left etc...
  • So maybe I found an explanation about this strange problem.
Following the last beta release I read the changelogs and found this in the changes made between Vers. 4.10 & 4.12 : "Fixed an issue where the user might see a blank black banner while navigating a shorter course."
I'm still on soft 4.10 and all the tests I've made with the TBT navigation was on really short courses...
I will test again next week-end with a long course to see if it works as it should ! And/Or maybe give a shot at the last Beta.
  • Create longer course (>2km), it doesn work on short ones.

BTW, is there way to properly convert TCX to FIT on android without requirements of using laptop?
