Is it possible to record the vertical speed ?

I am using the 5x mainly for trail and skyrunning and it is very important for me recording the vertical speed: now during the session I can see on the watch the actual vertical speed and the average vertical speed of the session ( this is ok) but then when I sync the session to GC I can get several parameters but apparently there is now way to have the graph of the vertical speed parameter.
I come from Suunto and in movescount was easy to add all the parameters you recorded in the session to see them in graph format and calculating the average value on a particular section of the session performed.
Can you please help me to understand what is wrong with my approach since I cannot believe that GC does not allow you to see ALL parameters you want but only a part of them.

thanks for assisting!
  • I would love to have this as well. And in general the possibility of having Graph for all the stats recorded by the watch. I hope garmin will finally deliver this...
  • As a mountaineer, I have also missed this feature terribly.
But I am also a developer and programmed a solution myself: Datafield: VSPD Vertical Speed.

VSPD Vertical Speed is available for download in the Garmin Connect IQ Store.
Please note that it is still in development. So if you have problems contact the developer. If you like it write a positive review.

VSPD is based on the Barometric Sensor. The altitude of the GPS has proven to be unreliable in the mountains. The problem is that the barometric sensor has a lot of noise. When smoothing you lose the reaction time. That's probably the reason why Garim Vertical Speed only shows 50m/h (which is too inaccurate for my use in training.

Check it out and let me know what you experience.
By the way, Garmin's presentation of the count also has flaws. Negative values are not always colored correctly. Blame Garmin for that not me.

  • Hello, could you elaborate on what information would you need displayed and recorded?
could you also define the skyrunning sport?
this would help me to guide you through a solution.
