Smart vs. 1 Second recording

Can we assume, that 1 second recording consums more battery power?
Or it is just about log data size?

  • yes there are many discussion about this topic, but from my understanding 1s recording will not consume more battery..as far as I know the watch will sample the data every second independant from the setting. If you choose intelligent the watch will just save the points where direction and or speed has changed and will ignore the points with no change so the file will be smaller

You could argue that writing to the .FIT file every second instead of every now and then would increase battery usage though... Might be nice to give it a try, measure battery decrease over a 1 hr run with 1sec recording vs smart recording :)

Now was this post sarcastic or patronising? Never can tell

    no wonder you are confused.
perhaps this last line is just "audacious" ...

1 second recording doesn't use more battery. the watch will record every second no matter what, it will just only keep *some* of the points rather than all of them to save on storage space if you have "smart" recording selected. this was an issue back in the earlier days of garmin GPS watches that didn't have much storage but the fenix line can store a year or more of workouts with 1 second recording so it is nothing other than a mystery to me why they even have "smart" recording. dcrainmaker has advocated for several years now that garmin make 1 second recording standard or the only option but perhaps now it is a marketing tool to set the higher price devices apart from the cheaper ones (even though they have tons of memory too nowadays.)
