OSM Map (from BBBIke.org) - Cannot authenticate map message after install on Fenix 5X

I have previously installed a couple of maps to the 'Garmin' folder of my 5x and these have opened successfully.

I am now trying to install an OSM map from bbbike.org. The file has a unique name 'gmapsup6.img'. When I restart / disconnect the watch after copying the file to the 'Garmin' folder of the watch, during the 'Loading Maps' stage, the message 'Cannot authenticate map. Contact map content seller for help.' is displayed. If I delete the map and restart, the message is not displayed, so this map is the cause.

The map file is 1.7 MB on disk.

I have copied the same map file to an SD Card and the map will open successfully in Basecamp and Homeport on my Mac. Basecamp and Homeport will also open this map from the 5X while the watch is connected to my Mac via USB, so this suggests that the file on the watch is not corrupted.

I am using the latest 4.10 software.

Has anyone encountered / resolved this type of issue please?
  • Given the message I suggest you do as it says and contact the map seller.

Note the fact BaseCamp will read the map is no indication it will work on your device.
  • Can't Authenticate Maps

This is what I found on the Garmin website:

If a Garmin device displays the message Can’t Unlock Maps or Can't Authenticate Maps, it has detected a map that cannot be validated for use with that device.

    This can be caused by:
◦Installing a memory card that contains maps intended for a different device
◦Copying maps from one device to another
◦A problem with the data in the map file
◦Incorrect or missing unlock information for an installed map

You will want to ask your map seller what is going on with your map.
  • I had this issue this morning. Sorted it out by re-installing the maps.
  • I have the same issue when trying to import maps from bbbike.org.  The problem is the map I selected is in UTF-8 format.  After change to latin1 format, I can successfully open the map in F5X.
