Is Auto Detect for Max HR working for you?

My5x is set to auto detect my max heart rate (in settings under physiological metrics). However, after several runs with a max hr in the low 190s (as shown in garmin connect mobile), my user profile on the 5x still had my max heart rate set at 174. I have now manually adjusted my max hr in the user profile to 190, but I am wondering if the auto detect for max hr is working for others. Or maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere? (I have only used wrist hr so far - no chest strap yet.)

Yes, with the caveat that it seems to have an off-by-one bug. My Fenix 3 had a few of those.

I've had mine set at around 180 bpm for a while. A week or two ago I hit 185 bpm while running. When I saved, the watch reported that I'd hit 184 bpm and (I think) asked me if I'd like to update my maxHR. When I look at the record of the run it shows 185, which I thought I saw on the watch while I was gasping for breath.

Thanks. My 5x is definitely not updating correctly then. I have the auto detect Max HR set to on. I am not sure what other settings could be overriding that setting. Did you change any of the default settings in the 5x user profile or in Garmin Connect Mobile or online?
