Nagivation options and Hike Settings

All, I was hiking and used the Navigation feature to get back to my starting point. I noticed some oddities such as the distance remaining in the data fields was quite different than the distance remaining in the navigation screens and guides. This brings me to some questions that Garmin's manual doesn't answer.

  • Whats the difference here: Hike Settings > Routing > Activity > Direct Routing vs. Hiking
  • Hike Settings > Routing > Courses > Use Map vs Follow Course

Appreciate the clarification.
  • The way I understand it :
1 Direct routing means as the crow flys , hiking will follow the map or the course as per your settings
2 Following a course is based on something you have uploaded vs using the available data on the active map to calculate your routing

Thanks, Garmin confirmed #1 for me.

For #2, if I don't have a course uploaded (I usually don't) what happens when I select "Follow Course" when using navigation?
  • The way I understand it , the setting only applies if you select a course and you have the navigation option set to use course instead of map , otherwise you will default to the map. Hope that makes sense ?
  • Hi,

In fact, i've try to follow a course whitout having a routable map for the hiking.
That give me a error message witch i assume that it was because of that map been without routable map.

Which option have you enabled for course in the routing options in your used app? Follow course or use map?

There is a confirmed bug here when navigating. If you add a data screen with the data field: Distance Remaining, it won't match up to the Distance Remaining shown on the navigation guides and screens. Please test this out if you'd like on your next hike when you navigate to various points. I emailed Garmin and they are looking into it. I provided screenshots in another thread.

I've try both and got the same error message.
The only way i could get the bact to start option was to disabled a setting that i can't remember!!!

    :-(

  • Tried it today with the world base map and routing set to "follow course" and it worked for me. No error message. Did I miss somethink?
  • To me the entire execution by Garmin with this follow map or course doesn't make sense and I wonder how much thought they put into it. My own observations (stated in several threads that I hope Garmin will eventually see) is that if you "follow map" the watch will reroute you if you deviate or come across an enabled avoidance. This reroute may completely ignore your course.
Essentially work like a car gps when you miss a turn, the SW will try to get you back on track. If you chose "follow course" you do not get turn by turn prompts which I believe garmin acknowledged that thats not right and they will look into it. To me it should be much simpler inteface, if i select to "do course" the watch should default to their "follow course" mode. If I chose to navigate to a saved location (or any location) without loading and selecting "do course" thats when the watch to calculate a route for me. This way you the watch wouldnt need the choice of follow course or follow map. The other thing I dont get is, within the activity/routing/ there is another activity choice which is pedestrian, cycling, hiking, etc, what does this setting control or affect???
