Fenix 5X wi-fi problems

I can't connect the fenix 5X to my wi-fi network.

I've added the network in garmin express.

I read other posts and changed the router channel, tryed to activate wi-fi near the router, turned the SSID visible in the network, tryed caps lock on and of in the password in garmin express...

Nothing works...

The watch always says "network error, please try again later".

I also have a Fenix 3 and it works with the same router everytime i turn it on
  • Don't you have MAC address restriction on your WiFi router? If yes, check whether you've entered F5x WiFi MAC address correctly. Due to the bug in former F5x firmware the MAC address shown under the Settings/About was displayed backwards!!! (In FW 3.30 it was already fixed, but if you checked your MAC before you have it wrong.) For me this was the case, now it connects without any problems.

How can i know if it is backwards ? I connected the watch to garmin express before 3.30. Then, i received one update via garmin express of version 3.30. After that i tryed to connect wifi and always displayed "network error, try again later". After that i erased the wifi network and connected again via garmin express several times... The same message apears.... I know how to get in the router definitions (provided by vodafone), but i don't know what to do to change the mac address and don't know if it is wrong or backwards.

    Can you help ? Thanks
  • I checked, and i don't have any mac adress restrictions on the router. Only password.
  • My 5X works about 1 time in 10 on my WiFi. The single failure messages are meaningless. My F3 would connect almost every time.
I do find that if I set my smartphone up as a WiFi mobile hotspot the F5X will connect OK. So there does appear to be a compatibility or connection problems with certain routers. But it's impossible to diagnose because there is only one message "failed to connect".
I do suggest using manual synch only as autosynch caused me all sorts of lost data problems on the F3. Switching to manual synch solved it. That problem disappeared into a black hole in Garmin support so I'm unconvinced it won't occur on the F5X.

This has been bugging me for weeks, and sure enough my MAC address was backwards...awesome ! Thanks
  • Just got my 5x today and also have not been able to connect to wifi. I got the device with 3.30 and it doesnt work for me. I had the F3 prior and wifi worked almost every time. What other things are there to try?

I found that if I delete the watch from the router connections list, it will connect to wi-fi... but just one time... then it will be on the router list and will not connect again until I delete it again.
  • HG180 causing problem for me.

I solved my problems with a new router. Its seems there is some sensitivity between the F5x and the HG180 router which is the "free" DSL Router that you get on an AIS account. ASUS router connects fine.
  • List of incompatible routers

It would help if there was a list of incompatible routers such as the HG633.

    Here I'm starting it :)

    HG133
    HG633

I can see a pattern here :) Maybe it is something specific Huawei routers?

There is a comment here that says regarding another kind of WiFi device:

"These routers broadcast on 8.2.11 b/g/n and 802.11 ac by default on the same SSID. the Wave is compatible with 802.1 b/g but may attempt to connect to higher frequencies. The frequencies can be given different SSIDs so that eth Wave can be set to connect to the SSID broadcasting on the compatible frequency."

I changed the default set-up so that the SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz were different but this didn't help.

According to this the watches use 802.11 b/g/n.

Could the problem be something to do with the ac protocol that the watch can't deal with?
  • Wifi works

    Hello,
I had problems with wifi as well. Formerly I had F3, no problem. Now I have F5x, doesnot connect.
    The reason is hidden SSID.
When I enabled SSID to be visible, works great!
