I bought my Garmin Fenix 5X in Malaysia and it is preloaded with Southeast Asia Map. However i will be doing Hiking / Climbing in Mount Rainier (Seattle) Washington. I have already downloaded the GPX from alltrails. Do i need to install the US Maps for the GPX to work ? Please Advise.
  • You may want to ask in the f5x forum, as people could help with what maps and how to load them.

GPX is just the route points, not the map. For the map, check out http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/.

    • Choose your map type: Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)
    • Choose a predefined country: (fourth box, choose Washington)
    • If the map has been generated already, a "Download map now!" link will show. If not, you'll enter your email address and a link will be sent when the map is ready.
    • Download the file openfietsmap_lite_gmapsupp.zip
    • Unzip the contents and place into the GARMIN folder on the 5X. Use the USB cable and connect to your computer.
    • Use your new, awesome map.

To answer your question it'll work wherever you are provided you get a GPS signal. If though you want to see your route on a map see above.
  • Can anyone advise the what the storage capacity for maps is on the 5x? Some of the maps I've generated are quite big and I'm reluctant to place on watch.

Also is there an issue unzipping from OSM.nl and transferring to the Garmin folder from a Mac?

There seems to be about 12GB of available storage. I've got 4 custom maps of Ontario, Canada and they're using at most 2GB.
