Step count during non-step activities

Why are Garmin persisting with their devices logging a step count during activities for which it is meaningless (cycling, paddling, etc)? It significantly affects the accuracy of your daily step count totals and IS NOT in any way a measure of activity or effort on your part, it's purely down to factors such as the bumpiness of the road, suspension in your bike, arm position, etc. I can ride 15km on smooth surface with lots of hills and only get a handful of steps, vs expending no effort to come down a short, bumpy track and get hundreds of steps.

The other issue is that if you're logging an activity, you're already getting a calorie burn count for it, but then I'm guessing you're getting additional calories burnt for the total steps in the day, which includes potentially thousands of false steps.

Step count in non-step activities is absolutely meaningless, recording it just messes with your metrics, please either disable it or give us the option to turn off step count per activity.
