Kitesurfing Fenix 5

Hello there !

Hi everyone , recently I bought a Fenix 5 ( my first watch of this kind .. sports related ) I might say I love it ! I am posting here since I am really knew to this and really need your help . I practice Kitesurf and I mainly want it only for this type of activity , now the thing is I have tried these activities ( running , running modified like I added some stuff , and one that I added myself ) of all three the running seems the most complete but the heart rate is weird or the speed for that matter ( according to garmin I am a record holder in kite speed haha not sure how I did 144km per hour but thats what it says . Questions

- Does anyone here use fenix 5 for kiting purpose and has some sort of app modified for the kitesurf and if so any info is very much appriciated
- Does fenix 5 measure in anyway sudden jumps ( ie if I am jumping does it show ? if not can I add a data field for that )

The main things I am interested when I kite are :

1.Speed ( top , minimal avareage )
2.Heart Rate
3.Time kited
4.Gps location to show me route of kiting
5.Performance
6.Calories
7.Height ( like lets say I am kiting on flat water sea level and then I jump , so something that shows that difference )

I know thats alot to ask but any helo is very much appriciated

Thank you in advance :)

Sorry BW23 for my late answer to your post. The data field is already available for download since few days (thanks to Zepaske for the link above).
I have modified the code yesterday in order to add some new functionalities, like the current bearing and the GPS signal quality.

And, in the next future, I plan to implement the calories burnt and the current HR. It will be done in the next few weeks.

Finally, reading your first post, what do you mean by: 5- Performance ?
    Thanks

Hi, where is the link of your data field please ? The data fields works on Fenix 5 ?

to philibert: apps.garmin.com and search kitesurf

Hi Surfy66 .... i've good news for you (and i hope for us!!)

I've a fenix5 from 2-3 days, and i'll use it for kitesurfing/snowkiting first. I've read the forum, and datas from barometer or GPS regarding Jumps are poor (i think..)
Reading around, i've seen that from Garmin Connect IQ 2.3.0. there are some improvements.... :
    Action Intelligence
25 Hz/3-axis accelerometer access, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters allow developers to create new active lifestyle metrics and use cases.

..On sept has been released the version 2.3.1:

Action Intelligence provides new levels of access to the onboard sensors and allows developers to create metrics for all sorts of activities, like measuring boxing power, tallying tennis racquet swings, rep counting, and more.

Now you can use the ACCELEROMETER sensor to calculate the Jump height, precisely how other sport sensors do.
    Here some hints: https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=418731.0

...now you can add a lot of features to your app, i think GForce included,
Please consider me for betatesting :D :D

    You're wrong...
Xsensr app read data from an esternal sensor, and NOT FROM THE WATCH.

Btw this weekend i'll test first beta of a kitesurfing app, for the fenix 5 (who use watch sensors).

Btw is strange that noone has made an android app who calculate jump height and gforce, like woo, xsensr or north piQ.

Xensr app on the Iphone Watch uses the sensors off the watch, you don't need to take the phone on the water: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1220676251 "Leave your iPhone behind and capture it all using the sensors in your Apple Watch." Xensr app READS THE SENSORS IN THE WATCH!! You see the height from your last jump on your watch on the water.

Hey I'm very interested in that / your kitesurfing app, please make it available for the vivoactive 3 too, once it works!
  • Hello all,
just to inform you that the app in question is developed by me, and should be a great improvement of the dedicated datafield JMG-DTF Wind-Kite Surfing
I use device sensors for calculating altitude, jumps and more, and this app integrates a lot of great functions, like the upwind / downwind efficiency represented by a compass with cursors, for example.

The app is extremely complete and detailed, with the displaying of 4 full screens, configurable from the watch itself, and is aimed to be used by windsurfers, kitesurfers, and maybe more...

Currently, the app is in its final release state, and is being tested by SkizZo, with good results.
I need to improve the code, test again all the features and it may be launch in the next few weeks (depends on the SkizZo's tests, and the wind conditions too !)

And for MrRadlos, the app is full compatible with Vivoactive 3, obviously.

I will come back to this topic to inform you as soon as the app will be uploaded to the Garmin store.

    Aloha !

    Any updates on this app?
  • Hello all,

    that's it !
The app has just been uploaded to the Garmin site few minutes ago. Waiting for the Garmin approbation now.
The name of the app is JMG-APP Wind-Kite Surfing, in order for searching it in the store.

The application has been tested several times by a kitesurfer and seems to work fine but, it could remain some bug or dysfunction, specially with jumps calculation + airtime (very difficult to manage) so, I do not hope but, we never really know...
So, if there is something weird with the app, please contact me by email or with this topic instead of writing bad comments and poor ratings, there is a lot of work behind this app so please, be tolerant.

You can get complete information on these pages:
    - french: https://www.jeanmichelgruber.com/applications-garmin-garmin-apps/jmg-app-wind-kite-surfing/français/
    - english: https://www.jeanmichelgruber.com/applications-garmin-garmin-apps/jmg-app-wind-kite-surfing/english/

Happy riding with this new incoming app !
    Aloha

Hello friends, I am writing to ask you what GPS equipment we recommend. We are a kitesurf travel company. We take groups of sailors along the coast in a 1000km route along the north coast of Brazil. from Fortaleza to the Lencos Maranehnses. In 70% of the journey we managed to go along the beaches with the trucks giving support to the group and having 100% visual and support. Our problem is in the remaining 30%, at which point the vans do not have visual with the group, then the support team waits at the destination. We need you to recommend the right equipment to get via GPS tracking, know where the group is. The connection has to be satellite and not via internet, the signal is not good during the trip. I await your response, thank you very much!

    Hello Surfy66

I'm really glad someone managed to program an app that can record jumps with the accelerometer!

Surfy66 I recommend you start a thread just for this new app where we can tell you bugs that we can find. I will give my first impressions here anyway:

    - I've got a vivoactive 3 and use a iphone SE to pair it with. On the iphone connect app the JMG-APP Wind-Kite Surfing app does not appear (not installed, not favorites). This problem happens with other IQ Apps to and with other watches (see https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/garmin-connect-mobile-application/garmin-connect-mobile-ios/1299370-fenix-5x-favorites-not-shown-as-installed-apps ). As I can not see the app on the phone I can not enter the settings of app on the phone - I hope I can use Garmin Express on the computer to unlock the paid version!

    - Your app turns on the backlight of the Vivoactive 3 when the touchscreen is pressed. If the backlight is on or off should be chosen by the user in the settings of the watch for all apps and not by the app. Because the battery of the VA3 is small and the display can be read very well outside, I presume that most people turn the light off. You will find long threads on this forum about people that complain about the light draining the battery of the VA3 while swimming in indoor pools, because the water activates the touchscreen! So it is important that the app does not turn the light on, it should stay the way the user set it in the watch settings.

    - I took me a while to find out, how to get to the wind axis with the VA3 (just one button and touch screen): You can sweep the screen down or up or left to right to get to the menu of the app. Tap on "Get the Wind Axis" and you will see
    "Watch towards th
    e wind and click S"
    Perhaps you could write
    "Watch towards
    wind+press screen"

    - On the first screen, where the current speed is shown, the watch will show "Wait" (until you get gps connection?). You have to press the button to start the app (recording).

    - When you press the button again the app will show "Save session" and "X" and the symbol for yes. After you pressed eighter yes or no the app will carry on and show "Wait" again

    - When you sweep left to right while the app is recording/running the app will show "Pause" instead of "Wait" and carry on when you sweep left to right. If you sweep left to right while the app shows "Wait" the app will stop/exit. This seems to be rather difficult to remember and is not very user friendly.

    - To change the screens you have to tap the touchscreen in different places. This does not work the way it is shown in the instructions! On my VA 3, tap:
between about 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock brings you to second screen (difficult to find right spot)
between about 4 and 6 to the second screen again !!
between 3 and 4, where the little dot an the second screen by the HR is will bring you to screen 5 "Hall of Fame" (very difficult to tap right place)
9 to 12 o'clock to the first screen (correct)
6 to 9 to screen to the third screen (correct)
I never managed to tap the right place for the forth screen ...

    - Please show the time of the day and battery % somewhere - for me it should be on screen 3 as I will use this screen

    - The font to show Numbers (Speed, Height ...) must not be smaller than the one showing the wind efficiency - because you won't be able to read them while driving.

Looking forward to test the app on the water!

    - OK i can enter the settings via Garmin Express

    - Please set the Activity Type in the FIT File to kitesurf or windsurfing according to the settings (then we don't always have to change from other with garmin connect). The FIT protocol can be found here: https://www.thisisant.com/resources/fit
According to this protocol for kitesurfing or windsurfing this are the right settings:

Type Name Base Type Value Name Value Comment
    sport enum
    kitesurfing 44
    sport_bits_5 uint8z Bit field corresponding to sport enum type (1 << (sport-40)).
    windsurfing 0x08
    kitesurfing 0x10

I hope that would change the type of activity we see in the garmin connect app?
