Hello there !

Hi everyone , recently I bought a Fenix 5 ( my first watch of this kind .. sports related ) I might say I love it ! I am posting here since I am really knew to this and really need your help . I practice Kitesurf and I mainly want it only for this type of activity , now the thing is I have tried these activities ( running , running modified like I added some stuff , and one that I added myself ) of all three the running seems the most complete but the heart rate is weird or the speed for that matter ( according to garmin I am a record holder in kite speed haha not sure how I did 144km per hour but thats what it says . Questions

- Does anyone here use fenix 5 for kiting purpose and has some sort of app modified for the kitesurf and if so any info is very much appriciated
- Does fenix 5 measure in anyway sudden jumps ( ie if I am jumping does it show ? if not can I add a data field for that )

The main things I am interested when I kite are :

1.Speed ( top , minimal avareage )
2.Heart Rate
3.Time kited
4.Gps location to show me route of kiting
5.Performance
6.Calories
7.Height ( like lets say I am kiting on flat water sea level and then I jump , so something that shows that difference )

I know thats alot to ask but any helo is very much appriciated

Thank you in advance :)

    How to track Kitesurfing

I have tried to copy an existing activity to track my Kitesurfing. I copied 'Open Water Swimming' but didn't get heart rate (as expected) but did get loads of steps accumulating when I was out on the water ... I then tried 'Cycling' and got heart rate (as expected), but still I had loads of steps accumulated - not what I want!

Has anyone a good idea of how to track kitesurfing activity without getting steps added while I am on the water??

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I'm not a kite surfer, but have the following comments:
    1. Speed. GPS data points can have an error of 3-5 meters - which can lead to some erratic recorded speeds. Most GPS's smooth speed over a few seconds to eliminate this, but it is possible if you get a sequence of erroneous GPS plots behind you, and then a sequence in front of you to get an artificially high spike in recorded speed. Such a sequence is rare, but not unknown - it's inherent in GPS.
    2. Poor heart rate with OHR is often down to poor positioning and placement. The watch strap should be snug, and positioned away from the wrist bone to prevent excessive movement of the watch.
    5. Performance is calculated based on heart rate compared with a well-studied baseline. For road running, this baseline is speed and ascent, while for cycling it is power measured through a power meter. Performance is not available for other sports, as well-studied and easily measured baselines do not exist. This would include kitesurfing. :(

wonder how Suunto tracks that, since they have it built in.
  • Hello all, and Rebetiko.
I have seen this post few days ago and would like to inform you that I have just developed a new data field for windsurfing / kitesurfing sessions.

    It will display those data:
    - current speed (in knots, unit used for those sports)
    - max speed reached during the session
    - average speed of the session
    - a "10 seconds run" with the best 10 sec of the session (a "10 seconds run" is achieved when the speed is over 15 knots / 30 km/h during 10 seconds; if the speed drops below this limit during these 10 seconds, the "10 seconds run" is cancelled and reinitialized).
    - the higher jump of the session (the initial altitude is calibrated during the first 10 seconds to avoid artefact
    - the current heading

The data field manage the start/pause/resume/stop functions.

The session will be saved in a FIT file, or not (switch in the app settings) with these data:
    - speed chart during the session
    - average speed (summary data)
    - max speed (summary data)
    - best 10 seconds run (summary data)
    - higher jump (summary data)

I have to finalize the data field, test it and then, it will be uploaded to the Garmin site for its validation.
So, don't forget to check the new apps incoming during the next few days.

Hope this data field will suit your needs.
  • Have you thought of using the native Boat app? My 3hr did not have it but this boat app has been great for dinghy sailing. It works with every sensor hooked up to it as well.

Hi Surfy66, Can you update us on the progress of this? You say to keep an eye out for the new apps, but can you tell me where I would find that? I assume it's somwhere in the garmin connect app on iOS but I can't seem to find anything other than the apps provided by garmin.

    Thanks

Sorry BW23 for my late answer to your post. The data field is already available for download since few days (thanks to Zepaske for the link above).
I have modified the code yesterday in order to add some new functionalities, like the current bearing and the GPS signal quality.

And, in the next future, I plan to implement the calories burnt and the current HR. It will be done in the next few weeks.

Finally, reading your first post, what do you mean by: 5- Performance ?
    Thanks
