Hiking modes for altimeter and barometer

New to the Fenix watches. Was using a Suunto Core previously. When hiking with elevation changes is there an altimeter "mode" that should be used? On my Core I'd do something like this whereas if we were at camp I'd set it to barometer only so the altitude would hold constant.

Yes, is it possible to set barometer in "barometer mode", "altimeter mode" and "auto" mode.
  • Hi, are you able to explain what the differences are between those modes.

    Thank you

Altimeter mode would mean any change in air pressure would result in elevation changes only.
Barometer mode would mean any changes in air pressure would only change the barometer reading. It holds the altitude constant.

If you are hiking up a mountain you would want altimeter mode. If you are sleeping at your campsite you'd want barometer mode. The reason for the latter would be that your elevation won't change when you are not moving so you don't want to associate any air pressure changes with altitude.
  • The "automatic" mode means the watch will monitor movement, and try to determine whether to attribute a pressure change to barometric or altitude changes.

So if the watch is on a table, no motion detected, then pressure changes will be attributed to barometric change.

If the watch indicates movement, pressure change will be attributed to altitude change. There may be some more intelligence to it, but that's the general idea.

What I haven't figured out is that with my watch set to barometer, and auto-adjust altitude turned off, when I use an activity that includes GPS, the watch updates the altitude anyway.
