Charging on wall outlet?

Going on a trip soon and don't want to bring my laptop. What do I need so I can plug the Garmin USB cable into the wall?

Can I plug the cable for my Femix 5X into my iPhone or iPad wall adapters? How about my cars USB port?
  • No problem. If it's got a USB port, you can use it. Unless you forget your charging cable! :)

Awesome thanks! How does the cable or device not get a short or too much/little power? Is there a chip or something in the USB cable to regulate power?

All usb outlets (computers, wall chargers etc) gives 5v DC. If your product is supplied With a USB charging cable, you can use whatever USB charging Source you want :)

I have heard tha,t for example charging iPhone with iPad usb outlet, damages the battery of the iPhone. So, is it really so that you can charges the Fenix 5x with whatever USB outlet?

While different chargers have different maximum capacities (500 mA, 1A, 2.1A), part of the USB Standard is that it is the device being charged (not the cable) that determines how much current is actually supplied. Chargeable batteries will typically take a lot of current to start with, but this slows down to a trickle charge as the battery gets above 90%.

This is not true. It does not damage the iPhone when using the iPad USB wall adapter.

  • So I just had to return/exchange my 9 month old Vivoactive because it stopped holding a charge. (100% - 10% in 6 hrs). I was told by the Garmin Support Rep it was because I was using a USB wall charger and not my computer - they don't recommend that. I told them that was ridiculous but nonetheless that was their first response. They still granted the exchange.
  • You can't always trust Garmin Support Reps to know what they are talking about. Sad, but true.

With my old Fenix 3, Garmin even provided a wall charger and it was not really different to a charger, say from HTC, Huawei,...
The Fenix 3 didn't habe any problems with being charged with a wall charger...after 2 years still working like a charm and good battery life.

The same is true for my daughter's Vivoactive - she was using it 1 1/2 years and we always charged it with a wall charger (either from a HTC, Huawei,... smartphone) - no problems at all, battery life is still fine (but she switched to a 235 WHR).

So I'd also say you can't always trust the Support Reps....
