Any fenix users also use a Spartan Ultra?

If so I'd be interested to hear which one you have and how you think they compare. I admit that I'm gadget obsessed. I love my Fenix 5 but I'm looking for something else to tinker with in the future.
  • Yep, I have one. Specifically, the Ultra with stainless bezel. Also have the f5 with silver/blue.

Started off with an Ambit3 Peak Sapphire, which was stolen and replaced with another A3P sapphire that I still own. I held off on the Spartan Ultra due to it being a new product, and because I had no complaints with the A3P. Cue a too-good-of-a-deal-to-pass-up and I have a fantastically functioning Spartan Ultra.

The Spartan Ultra launch was botched with incomplete features and some bugs, no doubt. The updates have been great, and the darn thing just works. Does it have as smooth of tracks of an A3P? No. Does it somehow, despite having less than A3P level GPS tracks, nail distance? Yep.

Full disclosure: I use a Stryd with the SSU, but as power, thus pace and distance is not derived from the Stryd. When comparing the SSU distance to the Stryd distance on a path that has half and mile markers, the SSU and Stryd are often within hundredths of mile of each other. Hundredths...seriously.

    Any questions, ask away.

Well, I've had just about every one of the gadgets out there, starting way back with a Polar 700, or something like that. Went through a bunch of Polars, including the V800 (best tracking/GPS out there), M600, M400, etc. Then, the Garmins, 935XT, F3, F3HR, and now on my second F5, (first one was non-sapphire version, new one is sapphire). I have also had two Spartan Ultras, (sold one, got mad at it, and decided I didn't want it any more), two SSWHR's, (first was pre ordered, received it and the HR data was so erratic I sent it back within 4 days), then got a good deal on another Ultra, (Way less than 1/2 price on the Black Titanium model), and decided to bit again. This one was pretty decent for GPS tracking, and the Smart Sensor HR belt is great; the most comfortable one I've ever worn. Then, decided to take another chance on the SSWHR, as I heard they were going to implement all day heart rate, and sleep tracking.
Well, the slow development into an actual working class unit has let me to ship the SSWHR back, and stick with the F5. It's accurate, tracks excellent, OHR is pretty accurate for what it is, and if I need more accuracy, I have the HRM-Run, and even the Suunto Smart Sensor will pair, and give excellent data, including the R-R data that Firstbeat gets their conditioning data from. Add all of the other features of the F5, and well, the Spartan Titanium just sits on the shelf. I'll wait and see what the new update brings, and how it goes, (after all, it doesn't eat), and keep it to toy with, but I'd say unless you have probably around $350-400 burning a hole in your pocket, you'd be better off buying something else, maybe a bike meter, HRM-Swim, or something else.
Just my 2c worth, the Ultra is a fine device, don't get me wrong, I do like it, it's simply not as "advanced" as the F5, and lacks more of the very basic features of the F5, so the one I wear is the F5.

    Thanks both for the reply.

You can get the spartan ultra titanium for a great price here in the U.K. from Wiggle. I'm tempted to get one in the future but I think I'll save for a Stryd first.

From what I've read the spartan doesn't implement any of the first beat metrics, is that correct?

How do gps tracks compare to those on the f5?

Funny you should ask. Last night I did a head to head with the Spartan Ultra and fenix 5. They both did really well, though I was on the street, in open conditions, under clear skies. Still, the f5 held a much smoother track than it had previously, with pace being more stable, and distance reported was within a couple hundredths of the Spartan. ANT+ drops and short range between f5 and Rhythm+ not withstanding, I was impressed with the f5 last night.

However... I spend the vast majority of time in tree heavy areas with a fair amount of elevation gain/loss. The f5 is okay in those areas, but the Spartan is decidedly better. Plus, with the Spartan I can wear the Rhythm+ on the opposite arm and not even think about it. Same for the Stryd; it just works with the Spartan.

When running and trail running, the Spartan is what I pick up without a second thought. It just works.

I suspect the Fenix will get better. I've been really impressed with gps tracking and pacing of late.
