GPS track dropped mid-ride...

Hi,
Not sure if this is an issue with the latest update, but on my cycle commute, the last 2 evenings, the GPS route has dropped at the same point on the ride.
It did not drop at all before the update, and never with the fenix 3 on the same route. It is also not dropping on the way in to the office... Odd.

Its also in a park that it's dropping, by a river, so no tree coverage either. GPS and GLONASS turned on.

I have the details for the Heart Rate, cadance and temperatue for the section, and looking at the GPX file, It has data for the missing section, it just had me going in an exact straight line, at exactly the same speed for 2km... the road has bends in it... so not possible.

Anyone else noticed anything?

I'll keep monitoring it to see if it happens again!
  • I see that you're on an old version of the firmware. Have you tried updating to 4.10? (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?377787-f%26%23275%3Bnix-5X-Production-Software-Version-4-10-Now-Available!)

I'll upgrade today and try again tomorrow...

I had a similar bug when I clicked "resume activity" a while ago, and it was resolved. Resetting the watch might help you, but it is a nuisance to do. Do you have an error log file? How big is it? There might be something in there.
  • The last couple of runs I've done have been better. no dropped sections. I'm not sure if it's the update or the fact that I turned off "Dozen Cycle". a connect IQ data screen that shows all the fields I like at once... but I noticed it's appearing on Garmin as the track was "Recorded on"
  • This is really interesting. I'm also facing dropouts when using "Dozen Cycle" as data screen while riding my road bike.
On a 43 k ride last week it happened twice that the data screen showed zero speed despite I was riding normally. Leading the auto pause to step in.
After a couple of seconds speed showed up again and activity was automatically continued.
So far I have only recognized this behaviour when using "Dozen Cycle". It would be great if this could be fixed because "Dozen Cycle" shows all relevant / interesting data.
  • I had similar issues with my development FR935 watch and while riding i added a generic Garmin Field for Speed. The issue was there as well.

I did find an error in Dozen Cycle in the IQ 2.x devices Grade Calculation, and is corrected in v4.0.7.
I feel that a data field should not disrupted the internals of the watch firmware i.e. main speed or GPS function of the watch system.
An IQ app/data should be running in a user space (protected) not a kernel space. If this is the case, app/datafields are running in a kernel non-protected space, the issue(s) are still hiding in the watch firmware.

update: The Dozen Cycle was sending a value to a SDK Math method and as far as i know the method was not handing negatives properly. I will be creating a bug report for the SDK and will be forwarding it to Garmin.

Dozen Cycle v 4.0.7 no longer causes this issue.
  • I've been using dozen cycle for some weeks and never had GPS track drop issue. Also it shouldn't be an issue with memory space. I rode 235 KM's with some navigation when needed and HRV recording on, so a big big fit file in the end. :)
My only issue with GPS during rides is extremely high speed spikes after resuming activities.
