GPS track dropped mid-ride...

Hi,
Not sure if this is an issue with the latest update, but on my cycle commute, the last 2 evenings, the GPS route has dropped at the same point on the ride.
It did not drop at all before the update, and never with the fenix 3 on the same route. It is also not dropping on the way in to the office... Odd.

Its also in a park that it's dropping, by a river, so no tree coverage either. GPS and GLONASS turned on.

I have the details for the Heart Rate, cadance and temperatue for the section, and looking at the GPX file, It has data for the missing section, it just had me going in an exact straight line, at exactly the same speed for 2km... the road has bends in it... so not possible.

Anyone else noticed anything?

I'll keep monitoring it to see if it happens again!

same problem - gps drop out in a run

I lost about .5 miles today as the GPS dropped out mid-run.

I had both GPS and GLONASS turned on. I did have the metronome turned on as I was working to increase my cadence.

Not sure if this is a bug or just a temporary problem. Never had this problem before with my Fenix 3HR. BTW I am using a Fenix 5X.

This is a known issue that supposedly will be fixed in the next firmware update.

"Fixed an issue, where the watch would incorrectly report that GPS signal was lost, while using UltraTrac."

If you turn your watch off of UltraTrac and use one second recording Garmin says you should not experience the problem.

GPS dropped out during a race

I was participating in the 50K trail race with my 2 week old Fenix 5X and it dropped my GPS track at mile 19. It continued to record the distance, pace, and heart rate information for the rest of the race. I had GPS and GLONASS and Data Recording set to Every Second.

When I called Garmin Support they said that because it was set to Every Second that the memory was full so it could not record anymore GPS information. They recommended that I change the Data Recording to Smart.

Should I be concerned in the future? Is there a way to clean out some memory to make sure this doesn't happen again? Is there a way to check the free / available memory?

With the Fenix 3 and the same settings and had no problems recording a 24 mile run.

Hmmm I have recorded several longer rides than 19 miles without running out of space. I have it set to every second recording too. Had mine a few weeks now so has a lot more info stored on watch.

That is laughable! Some of those support folks know zero! I ran a 50 miler on 1-sec and recorded fine! It's some other issue! My watch did that last week on an 8 mile run. I looked down and it was back on the time-watch screen and gps data was stopped. Back in run app I had to start it again. Definitely a bug!! Don't trust the Fenix support. They also told me the Fenix 5 didn't support Strava Segments! Idiots!

Still happening... Strava Segments related?

Hi All, Thanks for the responses.
Just noticed it happened again on my ride this morning.

I don't have Ultra Track on.

It's not running out of memory, because it starts recording again.
It has my speed varying throughout, and I don't have a speed sensor on, it could have only got it from the GPS...

Thinking back, there was a segment triggered at that point, going in the opposite direction, (well back over the flyover I'd just cycled over) and the watch got stuck on telling me to turn left in 30m, for a couple of km, until i manually flicked the screen back to the main screen. could be related. I'll try turning off the segments for a couple of runs, see if it happens again!

I see that you're on an old version of the firmware. Have you tried updating to 4.10? (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?377787-f%26%23275%3Bnix-5X-Production-Software-Version-4-10-Now-Available!)
