Navigation not picking up when course returned to.

This morning I used Run navigation of a course. At the beginning I chose a slightly different route and the watch displayed off course. After about 2 minutes I returned to the course and followed it for the next 50+ minutes crossing the line of the course several times but able to see the line of the course on the watch. The watch never picked up that I was on course and continued to display off course throughout the run. Same thing happened on a bike ride the other day but other devices e.g. Edge 520 correctly notice when you go back on course after leaving it for a bit.

The run/ride was otherwise recorded correctly.
  • Does this happen to you all the time? I ask because this is not the experience I have seen. I have a bike ride where it routed down a rather nasty road I prefer to avoid and it quite happily moans at me when I go off course to avoid it, but does go back "on course" once I join the route further along. I have also successfully joined a course part way through while running without problems.

    Same here

Same here. On a 12k hike yesterday I planned the course on Basecamp and transferred to the 5X. Once on the go, I deliberately deviated from the course to see what the device would do. It groaned a little and told me to go back on-course, but then picked it up within seconds when I did. Better than that, on the return leg of my hike, I deliberately went down a parallel track and the device told me I was off course, but then after a while, recalculated the route based on my position. I noticed a little deviation on the GPS side of things when I arrived home, next time I'll try 'lock on road' to see if the accuracy improves slightly. Assuming this issue to be software as opposed to hardware related.

Not sure if it happens every time I don't use courses a lot but it happened on a cycle ride and a run (of the same course - so maybe it is the course - it was created with Garmin Connect). For the run I deliberately ran across the path of the course a few times as it looked like I was always to the left of it on the map but it didn't make any difference. I am unlikely to use the course again as I know the way now.
  • This 'no return after off-course' appears to be another symptom of the miscoded navigation function.
As I posted elsewhere (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?374880-Resume-Later-causes-Course-Navigation-failure), the course is not picked up correctly if you start navigating after the start of the course (it tries to direct you back to the start). Similarly, if you Pause/Resume Later it will try to direct you back to the start.

None of these three dysfunctions are presnet in the Fenix 3 navigation so Garmin has the coding solution. Let's hope they get it done for the next software release.

This does not happen for me. I make courses in Basecamp and so far, I haven't had any of the issues you describe.

All works well for me unless as I said if I start the course navigation after I have started the activity (beyond course startpoint) or Pause/Resume later/ Resume.
Are you clear you cannot replicate these failures or perhaps you misunderstood my description?

In case we are describing diffrent situations please describe your workflow for your course production and transfer to F5X.

I initially produce mine on gpsies, save as a tcx file, transfer to SportTracks 3 (with Waypoints and Courses plugin), add specific TBT and waypoint features as coursepoints, save this as tcx, convert to fit with MCBadger tool, then finally drop fit file into newfiles folder. This gives me designed next waypoint and turns navigation features with ETA, etc.
