Navigation question

Apologies if this is blindingly obvious, but is there a way to navigate a route to a destination which is off the screen , e.g a mountain 30 miles away , either by pinpointing a position on the map or by typing in a name . I have tried POI but I think this only gives me destinations close by.

Maybe the easiest approach:
After selecting the Navigate app, go to the "Use Map" (at the very bottom of the menu). You can now move around in the map (short press on the Select-button to change the way the Up/Down-buttons work) and scroll to your desired location. You can now long press the Select-button, select one of the choices there and again select Go.
