Fenix 5 screen colours not so good....

Finally got my f5 two days ago and the lack of colour has me worried. It seems the colours on the screen are washed out. The whites a little grey and the colour not so vibrant.
Has anyone else have this problem or is it just how it is?
  • Is this your first Garmin? If so, it's something many people notice when they first see the display. The display is reflective LCD, which means very low battery usage, and the brighter the light (bright sunlight) the easier they are to read. And it seems for the marketing pictures, there's a flash involved, so they look bright in pictures.

Changing the colors you use for something like the watchface will probably help in lower light conditions, as will adjusting the backlight settings (it's only at 20% as the default), and having it turn on with a gesture.

The sapphire glass also mutes things a bit vs the mineral crystal of the reg & S versions(or compared to the 935).
The color is good compared to my Sunnto Spartan but definately not like the photos that Garmin puts out in their advertising. But much like food packaging or even Best Buy ads, "screens are simulated" in those as well.
I'm not worried and actually mapping shows up pretty vibrantly, so it CAN be bright and colorful, just not like the pics tho.

Even the screen resolution on the ads are much much higher than the real watch display resolution. Another way Garmin lies us, but I prefer those displays to battery sucking amoled displays; so no issue with some lost colors. You should have seen it with Fenix 3 watches, they could only display 15 colors without dithering etc. :D

I had a 3hr briefly between my Sunnto Spartan and when my 5x came. I honestly see the font/pixel clarity of the 5x more than the colors as an upgrade. So I didn't mind 16. Not that I'll turn down more colors tho!
