Distance Now Reading Short

After last firmware update my 5X now reads a consistent 1% too short on my tried and tried local runs. Anyone else noticing this?? I think they adjusted the algorithm too much in the wrong direction.

So, you are stating that it is very accurate indeed! I can't see any other way of describing such a result. What level of accuracy do you expect? 100%? And, incidentally, perhaps you could describe how this difference is impacting on your training.

Don't you have anything better to do? He/she simply posted in a public user forum about a negative change he's experienced and simply wanted to see if it was a trend with anybody else. Find something better to do than mock people.

To the OP, I myself haven't noticed much/any difference in my distance tracking.. still struggling with pace consistency though. I'll watch closely and see if I notice a difference over any of my known distances
  • The point still remains, 1% error is neither here nor there. It's not about mocking - that is definitely not what the post is about.

It's about expectations and reality. There is a need for people to align expectations with reality. Here is a classic example once again of someone expecting 100% accuracy. The number of forum posts would be greatly reduced if people focussed on what really matters rather than nit-picking over small percentages of difference that are neither here nor there.

I never understood this mentality.. it's as if you yourself are paying for the bandwidth or something. If you don't like a post, move on. Why even have the forum in the first place? My apologies in advance as I'm sure this addition won't meet your strict standards on what I'm assuming is your personal forum.

I do agree that a lot of folks need slightly more metered expectations as far as 100% accuracy goes, but I also understand the frustration. Everybody wants 1000 features and it's no real surprise when none them work that well. It's a balance... an expensive one though

I'm with you...have had the 5X for about 2 weeks and continue to be impressed with features, firmware stability and tracking. In 99+% of my running it even shows me on the correct side of a 2-lane road which far exceeds the design specs of the GPS constellation for civilian users.
  • The OP just said before the update and after the update there's a difference in distance counting of 1% that wasn't there before.
He's asking if anyone else noticed that and he's right to ask because Garmin doesn't always write down complete changelogs, for one reason or the other.

It's not a complaint, it's got nothing to do with expectations. On runs he did time and time again, he used to read 1% more than he does now and that's all.
Better off reading things properly. He's asked a question and if you don't have an answer I think the best thing anyone can do is not to post anything at all.
  • It's reading an additional 1% less distance than normal I might add. In a 49.1 mile race it read 48.3 and my buddies read 48.1....this is out of the 1% range. All the other Garmin watches I saw in Strava read 49.0-49.2 mile uploaded my track to mygpsfiles.com and it read 49.2....for some reason the watch is clipping off distance. I think almost a mile off after 49 miles in wide open territory without trees or canyons is unacceptable.

  • I'm having the opposite experience, my Fenix 2 showed 42K on my last run and my 5X showed 40.97...I"m running 2.90 on the 5X
  • Yes, this is what I am seeing. The Fenix 5x is now reading short on distances....
