Resume Later causes Course Navigation failure

Today I did a 10 mile hike with a downloaded course.

As reported elsewhere, if you start an activity and then select and run your navigation the course fails as it tries to send you back to the start. So the lower information field on the map page gives you distance back to start and continues to increase as you proceed. Obviously too all ETA of next waypoints and end of course are now non-functional.

So I made sure to select/do course before starting activity today. All now good.

Until that is I stopped for lunch and did a Resume Later. When I did resume the activity recorded correctly BUT the navigation tried to send me back to the start. wtf. So annoying.

With the Fenix 3 neither of these were issues (at least in later sw versions). Starting a navigation course after starting an activity would not be a problem and would pick up the course where you where. Similarly, resuming an activity was not a problem for course navigation features.

I will, until Garmin fixes this, not do Resume Later and ensure that I only stop for 15 minutes (when activity autosaves) or perhaps start/stop repeadetedly until I want to set off.

Ho hum.
  • I think this may differ depending on whether the routing is "follow course" or "use map". I was doing a long run last weekend (on "use map"), and after ignoring the guidance several times my 5x got its knickers in a twist and re-planned the route using the shortest and quickest way to get to the end. Annoying! So I stopped navigation and started it again, and the 5x immediately carried on following the expected route from where I was till end.

I just did a test and the resume later feature worked fine for me. I loaded a course with waypoints and the dist to next wpt and distance to destination didnt change after I resumed the activity.

Just to be sure we are on the same page.
    You Stopped > Resume Later ... lunched/whatever ... Resume.

Scratch that, I misread your original problem. I did recreate it and it is indeed a bug. After resume it brings you back to the beginning before continuing on. I forwarded the issue to the beta team

I've had problems with resume later as well. I first noticed it with firmware 2.40.
  • FYI Autosave feature on F5X

At the end of my run today I 'Stopped' but then left on the pause query 'Resume' screen rather than immediately save the activity.

With my F3 it would autosave usually within 15 minutes when paused in this way.

The F5X was in pause mode for over 30 minutes and then gave an alert buzz/vibration with a 30 second countdown. I pressed 'Back/Lap' before that countdown finished and the pause 'Resume' query screen returned (that couldprobably last another 30 minutes but I saved at this point).

So on my 14 mile hike with navigation tomorrow I will not 'Resume Later' and lose the navigation functionality (as described in my original thread post) but just Resume within 30 minutes. I am not likely to stop for that long.

In this way I hope to avoid the problem from my last hike. I'll let you know if navigation is all good with this process.

This workaround (if successful) does not mean that the Resume Later course navigation bug doesn't need fixing. It does. Garmin can do it as it works fine on my F3.
  • Well done Garmin. They have apparently fixed the Navigation/Resume Later bug in their latest 3.42 beta release. Will hope to check out soon.
