There is a way in the mobile app:
Go to your device -> User settings -> Custom stride length

There you can override the default values.

From what I can tell it is a manual process. Do you have the Garmin Connect app on your phone?

Pick a known distance somewhere/anywhere and walk it. Count how many steps you take. Next, run back and count the number of steps it took to run.

Go to the phone app > Settings > User Settings and you can enter both a Walking Stride Length and Running Stride Length. Enter the distance you used and how many steps each took.

I could be wrong, but I thought it happened automatically if you took a 20 minute outdoor (GPS) walk. I thought it told you to go walk outside so it could figure out your stride.

I haven't done any manual calcs and mine is fairly accurate from what I could tell. (off something like 5%)

I found my running stride length was off by about 10% (not sure if this was due to walking as part of my warm-up, or lack of GPS data while running through a tunnel confusing the autodetection).

I manually adjusted stride length through the settings on the phone app, and cadence-based speed is now far more accurate.
  • Well, when you finish the Treadmill activity, Fenix 5 asks following option "Save, discard, Calibrate & Save, Pause, resume late....etc" ... At this time Choose "Calibrate & Save" option. This way Fenix will ask you the distance to manually input at the end of the activity (input what you see on treadmill) and then save it. It will calibrate the details accordingly...
There's one problem in that, it doesn't re-calculate the paces for which even I raised the query to Garmin Experts.

Is this really true that you get these questions after a treadmill run? When I bought my F5X I knew that indoor running might be inaccurate because it differed like 10% on my 920XT. I first GPS ran with it outside a couple of runs and then tried it at the gym. I got the same bad result with F5X with a big disappointment. I did not get any questions like that after my run. Decided to buy a footpod but then I found this forum thread. I will probably use my footpod anyway but this is good news anyway. Could this have been implemented after I ran with it on treadmill? I think it was in June.

I saw this the first time but haven't noticed it since. Perhaps I've just not scrolled down enough...will take another look. Thanks!
