Fenix 5 and foot pod

Just received my foot pod from Amazon. Anyone else use one with a Fenix 5 for outdoor running? If so what settings do you use? Did you perform any manual calibration or just leave it on auto calibrate? Do you notice any difference for instant pace or your final pace graphs?
  • Would footpod solve this problem?

    Yes :)
  • I use a Garmin Footpod with my Fenix 5, and the "instant pace" on the watch is really nice to have while running up small hills.

Had no problems at all setting it up, I just changed "Speed" to always and just went out running. The calibration factor is adjusting itself continuously, moving slightly up and down. But seems to be rather spot on all the time, especially when I use it on my regular threadmill runs - matches the calibrated threadmill perfectly.

Interesting. Does the footpod adjust in real time then? If I switch from warm up to tempo pace for example, will the footpod adjust fairly quickly to much longer stride length?
That would make instant pace very useful, I just use lap pace for now.
I have a footpod lying around but never used it much.

The foot pod calibration factor only updates after the end of an outdoor run (with GPS on and the Auto Calibrate option is turned on in the foot pod settings on the watch). The foot pod is not just a simple way of multiplying a stride length by cadence to calculate speed, but it's an accelerometer strapped to your foot so it 'knows' what each stride length is from the motion of your foot. So it absolutely copes with a change in pace, cadence and stride length as you run. Furthermore the calibration factor is nothing to do with stride length, but rather a percentage adjustment to account for your running style throwing the motion calculations off.

    Great stuff crispin!

Some more noob questions from me though. Just did my inaugural run with a foot pod. I did pair the footpod to my F5 after acquiring GPS.

The run loaded up to Garmin Connect so I assume the pace on there is taken from the foot pod? I don't see any mention of the foot pod in the stats for the activity so curious how people know that the foot pod signal was connected the whole time. (Settings: Speed always, Distance indoors)
  • Could you tell me what happens with footpod calibration
When one day i run 4min per km and next day 7 min per km
So calibration will be always change and i never will have current speed correct right?
I use speed always and distance indoors

The footpod has to be calibrated first. I think it takes running half a mile with the GPS on to calibrate it. I'm not sure then on the first run you will get accurate information with it.

That being said you won't see anything about it in garmin connect. If you set the speed to always though it will indeed pull the pace graph from the footpod.

No. Like Crispin said the footpod is not a simple cadence counter. It actually knows how far your foot travels in three dimensional space. Therefore, if you change your pace during a run or on different runs it will most definitely know your correct current speed in both circumstances (once it's calibrated).

I think you guys have talked me into getting a foot pod. :)

I use lap pace with my Fenix 5 and overall am happy with it, but it sounds like the Garmin foot pod will provide more accurate pacing. I'm tempted to get the Stryd because of all the good things I've ready about its pace accuracy, but it cost 4 times as much for probably just a percentage or two improvement.

Pacing definitely seems more stable using the foot pod.

I have seen some gaps in the data from a run today. I seem to have gaps in stride length, vertical ratio, ground contact time etc data points. I don't think connectivity to my F5 dropped out so at the moment I'm just putting it down to the way I did my interval run.

I'm also interested to try and determine which sensor each of the metrics is calculated from. Looking at the graphs on connect I would say that it's using the foot pod to fulfil the majority of the metrics over my hrm-run strap. I think this is the case because the graphs all look different since switching to the foot pod. For a start there seems to be fewer data points plotted on each graph. At the moment this is all just guess work because I haven't had the time to think about it or analyse it.

Overall though I think the foot pod was a worthwhile purchase and addition to my F5.
