Fenix 5 and foot pod

Just received my foot pod from Amazon. Anyone else use one with a Fenix 5 for outdoor running? If so what settings do you use? Did you perform any manual calibration or just leave it on auto calibrate? Do you notice any difference for instant pace or your final pace graphs?
  • This is for me very important.
I use only speed from footpod, but always 10s is different between temporary speed than last km.

And also on footpod lower vo2max i don't know why
  • Lower voy max

I also have lower vo2 max until I set up my stryd as a speed source
  • I do use a footpod with my F5, but only for indoor, treadmill running, and it is spot on. I used auto calibration on a couple outside runs to get it in the ballpark then switched it to manual and adjusted it to my treadmill. I have no clue which is correct, the treadmill or my F5, I just don't like ending up a run with one or the other 0.5 miles ahead or behind. I'm not a competition runner, and really don't care much about pace. I'm in it for the calorie burn. :)

    Cheers

  • Yes, I do use Garmin Footpod. Set to Speed/Pace: Always; Distance: Indoor.

Autocalibration adjusts the calibration factor when you are outside with good GPS.

But best to run a known distance and manually adjust calibration factor.

When you get it right the instance pace is excellent (you can not rely on GPS alone for this).

I don't use it for distance outdoors as I find gps distance accrual good now (F3 experience and now F5X).

Once you have it right then naurally indoors (with no gps) it is good for treadmills.
Some like to switch Distance: Always indoors as some indoors arenas you will get a gps signal, just not a good one.

My VO2Max has already dropped from 54 to 49 since switching from the F3 to the F5. This could just be a bedding in period because I've only had it a week. If it drops again due to using the foot pod then I'm fine with that. I'm thinking of setting it to Speed always Distance indoor. Are the Stryd sensors worth the money?

Well said Bill, my thoughts entirely.

Will, when you set the speed/pace: Always does the watch then use the footpod for just instance pace? Or, is it instant pace and lap pace?

The watch uses whatever is the source for Distance to calculate lap pace (lap pace = lap distance/lap time); so the foot pod needs to be set to Distance>Always to get lap pace from the foot pod when running outside with GPS on (otherwise lap pace is calculated from GPS derived distance).

    What Crispin says.
  • I don't have any experience with footpods, and I am thinking of buying one for my F5s. I am intrested only in outdoor running and hope to get more accurate pace readings.

If I set pace/speed to always and distance to indoor, would I get the average and lap pace from GPS_distance/time and instant pace from the footpod?

Basically, I am very happy with the distances (and the maps) my f5s is showing at the end of runs, but the pace is all over the place. Would footpod solve this problem?
