Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • The watch was out of stock with my shop and they got fresh supplies a week ago from Garmin so it should be one of the latest versions.

Would you mind disclosing part of the serial number so I could make sure I'd be buying from a recent production run?

I have not had noticed any problems with the data from my HRM Run but the range between my iPhone and the watch is significantly shorter than what my 235 had.

The Bluetooth range between watch and phone is not as critical to me versus watch and Bluetooth HR belt range. I know next to nothing about BT technology, so I'm not sure if your observation also translates to a similarly short BT range between watch and HR belt. I assume it would also depend on the belt's BT signal strength. In any case, I'm not even considering Ant+ belts with this watch.

  • No problem: S/N is 536071XXX

I have not tried it with a Bluetooth belt yet, maybe I'll try that one day for the cause :)

I got a Fenix 5 sapphire replacement from Garmin. I had serious problems with connectivity on my Tacx trainer. The new Fenix was much better. From 50 dropouts in an hour to 2-3 dropouts. That acceptable. No problems with GPS. Havent tried bluetooth yet.

Add me to the list. Been a bit confused regarding the shape of my heart-rate when running, looks too smooth as if data is low-pass filtered somehow. A few weeks/month ago I noticed completly missed pulses, as if the chest-strap stopped working. THought this was due to me changing it to a HRM-tri instead of the one I got with the edge520. Today though, I went for a quick 15minute run and got about 50% reported data. 50% of the time it was (around) 0 and the rest was around 170bpm, Data for 1 minute, then nothing for the next and so on. The other measurments you get was even worse, looked like a total of 10 points of data (running dynamics). THought the HRM-tri was dead or battery out, but when I did a re-read of the pulse-info it looked just like it should. I guess this is due to the fact that I wore a base layer, gore-wear bike-jacket and a wind-proof jacket ontop of that (-12deg celsius today). For once I did not care about HR when running so kept the watch below all the clothing as well. Guess that was a bit too much atttenuation of the signal.... And this is the performance of a high-end watch? Who would have thought that? I should have stayed in the low-end market, my FR205 for instance never missed a beat.

I spoke too soon! Massive dropouts with new Fenix 5 sapphire when connected to my tacx trainer on my latest workout.

here's a question for those with Stryd dropouts - do you have your phone connected when running with Stryd?

I just tried an experiment and disabled the phone connection on my watch and then ran for 2 hours 45 mins and not a single drop out

more testing required but maybe an acceptable workaround for now

Do you use an older Garmin speed cadence sensor? I have an older TACX and have noticed if I bring my wrist close to my chest I get dropouts during a workout. Body blocks ANT+ signal to the watch. Wrist (wearing watch) on handlebars or to side and zero dropouts.

Interesting: I have always wondered about that. I never have my 'phone connected when I run - it's one of the reasons why I wanted a GPS watch, ironically, cuz I wanted to run without 'phone... Anyway, I confirm I have zero dropouts from stryd since I use it (late December), always running without 'phone connected.

No, I only use the sensors inside the Tacx trainer. I have the watch on my left wrist and my hands on the handle bars. On my previous F5 I also saw that the connection often broke when I took a look at the watch in front of my chest. But then again.. it looses connection all the time.
  • I use Stryd and HRM-Run. Only noticed occasional data drops by the HRM-Run but these are very infrequent. So far no issues at all with Stryd.
