Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • And 920XT without footpod, note HRM Run recording heatrate but not running dynamics.
  • I can however confirm that the Stryd connection to my F5 is absolutely stable. In more general terms, I have been wondering whether the connection issues many have been experiencing could not be related to the n,umber of apps/widgets the watch is running, or to the connection of more than one ANT+ device.

My experience suggests not. I have a Stryd, and the connection is generally fine provided it's not too far back on the shoe - any dropouts tend to be from it going to sleep while I'm waiting to cross the road. As above, the HRM-RUN4 is much more problematic for me, either on its own or in combination with the Stryd, where an earlier model of HRM-RUN is solid.

  • Replacement still having ANT+ dropouts with Giant Ridesense speed/cadence sensor. Old one got nothing from it. New one picks it up on the drops but the 10cm move up to the hoods is enough for it to lose signal. 920XT has never had an issue with it.
  • Is there any reason to think using Garmin Ant+ accessories would work better than third party sensors regarding drop outs?

I'm waiting on delivery of a Garmin cadence sensor to test just that theory

no antenna issue....only worse, it is the ANT+/BLE chipset

may be so but let's hope the antenna change improves it - they have stated it is to improve signal strength so you'd hope it would

All of my sensors are genuine Garmin products and I am seeing huge gaps in data.
  • I disagree with dc rainmaker. If you need to reduce the transmit power to be able to fulfil the wifi specification is it because you get more power in the air from that specific antenna. Since wifi/ble/ant use the same antenna that in most situations gives that. Tx+rx for ant are improved, tx+rx for ble are improved, rx for wifi are improved.
