Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • Recently got hold of a cheap polar h7 hrm connected fine with my Fenix 5s and works a charm. Also my Stryd works 100% as it should zero dropouts and its on the opposite foot to wrist. Someone earlier suggested could do with the size of the user i.e. more flesh to block signal. I'm quite slim maybe that's a factor?

Still no drop outs here either with the Stryd when using the data field, now 4th week with the watch. Silver F5. Even GPS has been pretty solid so far. On par even if not a bit better than my FR235.

Wonder what is causing the disparity between user experiences...

Got a 5x last week in New Zealand, it's so bad! last night i had no heart rate data for the first 5 minutes, and then it started dropping out towards the end of my run.
I called Garmin Support Australia, who initially weren't aware of the issue and the after i was put on hold they were miraculously aware of it.
Apparently its a software fix that the US team is working on.
I then asked if i could return it and pay the difference to get a 5x and the lady said the 5x has the same issue! Even though it doesn't :( not sure what to do. Im pretty guttered like im sure the rest of you are.

The support lady also said she'd email me asking for my garmin files etc in the next 10 minutes, 24 hours later... no email. Garmin Australia support is almost as bad the Fenix 5 .
  • Well this doesn't look very good. First use of my HRM - TRi with my watch for a couple of weeks due to injury, looks like we have HR dropouts

It doesn't seem as connectivity problem. 140bpm while walking? I always encountered HR drops on sub 100bpm HR. Even with 920XT. I would guess the low hr areas is the correct HR and the peaks are some HR belt errors. Have you tried to replace the battery?
  • I haven't tried changing the battery as it is a new belt, but will give it a try. Thanks

    A pity I can't attach pictures...

I did have two similar exercises sunday: one with Garmin 5 Sapphire and HRM-TRI and one with Fenix 5X and the very same HRM-TRI. A LOT of dropouts with Fenix 5 Sapphire and not a single dropout with Fenix 5X. Even with the same band that is.

So my simple conclusion was to send back the Fenix 5 Performance bundle and keep Fenix 5X and buy HRM-Run separately. I will post the pulse curve pictures as soon as the forum allows it :).
  • Has anybody received a recent update from Garmin support? This has been going on for months and the promised software update is simply not arriving (and I suspect it may never as it is not practical to fix hardware design flaws with software updates without comprimising elsewhere such as battery life).
  • Does the HRM-TRI really differ from HRM-RUN? I do not have any dropouts with F5Saphire and HRM-RUN. Neither with HRM-Swim. As I see you guys mostly have problems with HRM-Tri...

I use a HRM Run and its dropping on the F5, doesnt drop on my F3
  • Adding my name to the list with ANT+ connectivity issues. Went for a ride with my F5 using garmin speed and cad sensors and Quarq PM - almost no power data captured (a few irregular points of data but thats it), many dropouts on cadence but speed looks like it may be OK. Also rode with an Edge 1000 (as I'm trying to figure how best to sync up data from both devices) on the same sensors and using the HR broadcast from the Fenix - the difference in the quality of the data tells me the F5 just isn't usable for bike activities as it currently stands.
