Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?

  • TrainAsOne only download the next workout from their website, only if you are in the trial mode or paid the subscription. That;s all, then you run as usual. Yes, trying to make RS+ test for the team to make it better :-)
  • I would really suggest focussing on connection issues with Ant+ devices without the impact of 3rd party app. In my case, I have no problems currently with HRM-Run and HRM-Swim (however, the second loses connection underwater anyway).
However, I wasn't affected with the Ant+ dropouts after setting my BePro power meter to max transmit power.

I wonder whether something was fixed by Garmin in the meantime. This may be important when making buying decision of new devices. Did you get any new feedback from Garmin? Especially those of you, who had reported problems with Ant+ and they confirm the issue...
  • wojtek_b I have finally logged a support ticket with Garmin regarding my connection dropouts.
I had originally been in touch a long time ago with the beta firmware team but I think they've run out of ideas and have just moved on from trying to fix these issues in software/firmware.

While the connection to my chest straps (I have had 3 HRM-Run4s and an HRM-Tri) have been good during running they will drop out on any activity that sees my arms stretched out away from my body (pretty much any gym activity for example). None of the firmware releases has ever fixed this issue.

While I do have RunScribe+ footpods I was never expecting the experience with them to go smoothly. However they have re-highlighted for me just how poor the Ant connections are on my particular watch. I haven't seen anyone really complaining recently so I'm starting to think maybe I just got a dud early model?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone who has exchanged their watch recently has seen better performance?
It's such a shame because there does appear to have been improvements in both bluetooth and GPS performance from when I first got the watch, but Ant has and continues to be poor

I thought it was common knowledge that the 5 series has had a hardware fault since day 1 and there is no fix via software/ firmware. Your best bet is to return the piece of expensive junk and buy something else that actually works.
  • I could not return my F5 sapphire and couldn't sell it so I gave my new exchanged watch a try and it really sucks. Short range Bluetooth and poor GPS tracks, looks like I'm drunk. I probably won't buy another garmin. If it worked with stryd it might work as a running watch but it doesn't. The only thing that's better on this watch is the screen, my old watch was very dark but the new one is brighter.

To be honest, I always had dropouts from my HRM-Run on the gym on the 920XT and on F5 as well. I think it's an issue with low heart rate. On the contrary, I don't have any dropouts from my HRM-Run and F5 on indoor rowing (when my arms are stretched as well)
  • I'm fairly new to fenix (since October). I have a garmin cadence, speed, HR and tempe sensors . Also have some third party ant+ and ble HR sensors.
The range is not famous (vivoactive HR had a much better range) however I can get 5 meter with almost any dropouts in any of the sensors.
Usually in a 3 hour MTB ride I have 2 or 3 dropouts.
Since I'm using 6.0 firmware it seems that there are hardware problems in some fénix.
  • I had problem with my F5 and connection to ANT+ garmin Tempe - really hard to find sensor + connectivity dropout. Sensor tested also with F3 wihtout any problems. My previous F3HR was really better if we are speaking about bluetooth & ANT+ connectivity. Garmin replaced my F5 with new one... now ANT+ is better,

can we check which version have better connectivity?

Andrej, what is the new serial number you got? I had a 0064xx and the replaced one is 101xxx and it has worse ANT+. Now I have sent back the second one for replacement as well. Russian lottery :-)
