Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • Tempe

I've just bought a Garmin Tempe to go with my F5 sapphire and it is disconnected more than it is connected. It seems to be okay when the watch screen is showing the temperature readout but as soon as the watch reverts to the watch face (showing the time) then it loses connectivity to the Tempe. Is this an issue with connectivity, as being discussed in this thread? or is it the way that the Tempe pod works? I haven't used it for an activity yet, could that be another factor?

That's actually normal. The Tempe (or any sensor) will disconnect if it's not being used by an app. If you start a run, the tempe should stay connected, but after your done, it will disconnect. Saem if you use an external HRM. With the temperature widget, it will try to connect each time you view the widget. And connecting to the tempe can take a minute or two.

I am very bummed about all of this. I am in the market for a workout watch, and am between the Fenix 5, Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR and possibly Vivoactive 3. I was leaning towards the Fenix 5, but with all this Bluetooth/Ant+ issues, I think I will go with the Suunto. I do a lot of biking, surfing and weight workouts with chest strap.
  • artoutsider,

If you're going for the fenix 5 series, and external sensors are important to you RIGHT NOW, go for the 5X. It's rock solid. Else, the Suunto will likely be really good right now if you don't want the 5X. I have the 5X and a Spartan Ultra. Both of those are doing great with external sensors. The 5X is my day to day activity tracker and activities such as walking and hiking. The Spartan Ultra is used for running and trail running. Both are fantastic.
  • 2nd run with stryd and used my old watch fr630, no drops and a nice gps track. Fenix series is a joke, hos track with Fenix 3 and 5 is a mess, I regret my Fenix 5 so much.

How many issues with the Fenix 5 and Bluetooth chest hr straps, especially Polar H10? Would be using for gym weight workouts. Is it dropping connection via bluetooth when arms above head during weight workouts? Been reading these forums to find out. Unfortunately, most reviews do not discuss these problems.

just had an email form Garmin who want to replace my Fenix5 for the ANT+ issue

they haven't said why, just emailed me out of the blue for the ticket I opened a couple of weeks ago

I've gone back to them to ask if it's revised hardware, if not I'm not sending it back as it's all good otherwise (and I need it for my marathon in a couple of weeks)

This is the typical behaviour I got with my 5X and Polar H10 (see picture, red chart is the HR readout from Polar H10 with several dropouts).
That's why I moved to FR935 for my workouts without any single dropouts with my Polar H10.

Had mine replaced also out of 'good will' - but only after Garmin first rejected any suggestion of issues with the F5, followed by me having to provide a deluge of additional fit files and chart images showing where data dropouts were rife, and then refute claims that the data was OK (it really wasn't). No indication if revised hardware in it but serial number is gone from <2500 to >68000 so here's hoping...

Haven't got to test the replacement yet but hoping it can't be as atrocious as the original. If it is I'll be right back to them demanding a straight up refund.

I'm on my second anyway after the first developed a faulty button

now on a serial no 533xx and it's no better than the first one

  • Hi Guys,

have a two week "old" Fenix 5. Had varying success with the HRM TRI GCT transmission, but today's run is beyond tolerable. Not this was still 5.83B, before 6 installed. I would say that there is some drop-in instead of drop-outs (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1991307493)
