Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • I haven't followed this in a awhile, and am in the process of deciding between a Fenix 5 and Forerunner 935. ANT+ sensors are really important to me. I have a dozen and regularly use 5 sensors during one activity. I hate post-processing for dropout corrections, and with the Fenix 3 I almost never have to. Does it make sense to go for the FR935 just to avoid ANT+ issues?
  • All the users that have no drop outs, could you post images of an example run/ride? One of the guys on here posted that he had no drop outs and uploaded his data and there were heaps of drop outs.

Please note:***The garmin mobile app does not show drop outs, Garmin have started masking it buy smoothing the data, If you look on garmin connect in your browser you'll see the drop outs. It's pretty sad way of hiding the drop outs if they've done it intentionally..

I've never had an issue with heart rate from my Wahoo Tickr X while running. You can see heart rate vs pace (from GPS, not a footpod) in this screen shot. I was doing intervals and heart rate tracked well with the intervals without an issue.

The only time I've had a complete drop out of the signals, both HRM and cadence disappeared for a split second while riding. You can see it in this screenshot from Strava upload. Potentially i was riding under some power lines or potentially the watch just freaked out. I'm leaning towards the latter. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1234509.jpg

From my last bike ride. HR: no dropouts. The "zero's" on cadence/power seem reasonable at places I stopped pedaling. If you zoom in, there is 0W presented.

Fenix 5s with HRM V1 and stryd no dropouts that I can see apart from 4 seconds of missing pace data strange?

  • Joining the list of convertees to the FR935. and actually am gutted.
Came from the F3HR and then the F5 Sapphire and love the fact that I had a watch with sapphire display. One less thing to stress about.
I also love the more rugged look of the F5

But.. also experienced the connectivity issues.
Stryd footpod.. just got it yesterday. Connected fine..until I started running when it was next to useless (just a field showing.. Connecting..)
Tri HRM band.. not too many dropouts when using on the bike, but some. Could have lived with it, if the only issue
Android smartphone.. literally sneeze and the connection drops. The F3HR was great. phone upstairs and me downstairs and still got notifications. F5 was frustrating.

The stryd looks like a great device to use and so am stoked I should be able to use it now.

On a plus.. really notice the lack of weight on the wrist now I have the 935.
and.. is it me.. or is the screen a little bit better?

I suspect that the sapphire on the 5 isn't quite as optically clear as whatever is on the non sapphire 5 and the 935. I noticed a little difference when I went from a standard 5 to a sapphire 5.

I really don't want to go to a 935, but that option is on the table if this issue is not resolved. Suunto and the 5x are also considerations. I purchased my watch at REI because their return policy is long enough to give Garmin a chance to really fix all these issues. I'll be exercising that return policy if they don't. This is my first Garmin device and to be honest, it isn't making the very best first impression.
  • just an update after my first run with the 935 paired with the stryd. Rock solid.
    same with connection to phone

No suspecting needed; mineral crystal is definitely more clear than sapphire. I've noticed that when going from a silver f5 to a 5X.

I went from an f5 that couldn't hold a stable connection to a Scosche Rhythm+ on the opposite arm, to a 5X that has no problems with the Rhythm+ and a Stryd. Also have a Spartan Ultra that's been fantastic, but at the moment it can do either power or pace/distance, not both. No worries though as I don't care about pace when trail running and the SSU distance matches up with the Stryd.

I really like both the 5X and the Spartan Ultra.

Maybe I'll look at a 5x if this doesn't improve soon. I hate that I'm basically eating the cost of the extra bands I've bought, but I'd rather have a watch that I never have to think about from a connection standpoint.

It seems to be easier to get a working unit with certain models. But, I've seen drop out complaints even from FR935 users so might be you'll never be 100% safe.

I'm quite happy with my silver F5 because I get drop outs very rarely so I think it's a keeper considering I got a very good discount on the watch (cost me less than FR935).

Hope they get the issues sorted out as I think the watch looks great and when works is probably the best sport watch available currently.
