Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • Before i had a Fenix 3 and always wore the scosche armband on the opposite upper arm. No drops then.
I think i can get used to wear it on the same arm. :p to prevent drops.

Strange since mit old F3 and 910 behave in the same way. Only good if worn on the same wrist. Maybe you got a extraordinary good F3.

Just wanted to chime in, did a ride today recording on F5 and Edge 520 simultaneously, with Powertap G3. Edge displays watts flawlessly, with Fenix 5 has dropouts constantly. I wouldn't care except, of course, Garmin won't download the Edge data from Garmin Connect onto the F5, so I'm stuck with the clunky solution of using both at once, so the fact that the F5 doesn't maintain a connection to my sensors (specially ones that have to travel through my body) extra egregious.
  • Can any suggest a Bluetooth chest strap that works?

Sadly if you search the forums you'll find people have had very mixed success with this particular strap, and it appears to be hardware revision related. There's one person who has two H7s and one of them works and the other doesn't. Both work just fine with his phone.

I myself have an H7s that refuses to work. It will pair up but it never actually displays a heart rate. I've tried the reset suggestion but if you have any other ideas on how to make it work I'd love to hear them.
  • Weird connection correlation here. Using my H10 I connect and have zero drops.I use my HRM-Tri, it connects, and is pretty steady... Until the watch moves behind my body. I took a stress test yesterday with the HRM-Tri. Had my hands behind my back for a minute, didn't get a signal, brought them back in front of my body, connected. Didn't even tell me the external hr connected (which usually is the case when doing a activity). There was just no numerical reading on the watchface when I brought it to the front of my body.

So, the watch is having a problem with receiving the ant + signal though the body? As far as I can tell, the BT signal doesn't have that issue, just a range issue?
  • I have regular drops with my F5 and ANT+ with Wahoo Blue SC speed and cadence sensor. This means my rides are on average a lot "shorter" than planned. And no - GPS doesn't correct for the loss in sensor and speed info. The sensor is 1 m from the wrist or handlebar n the same side as the watch. Thing is this is a eur 600 device and works worse than the Edge 520 bike computer.

    My questions:
    1. ANT+ connectivity seems to be a big issue on the F5/5S. Has Garmin ever publicly acknowledged this? I get nothing back when i contact customer support. Neither does it seems that Garmin dabbles in these forums. I might be mistaken of course.
    2. Will Garmin issue a recall? This product clearly doesn't do what it says on the box. And not everyone can return the device back to the seller due to location diffences. I.e. my 30 day time window for return has lapsed as i used the unit in good faith believing an update will fix it. Alas...

As someone thinking of buying an F5 that's worrying. What's confusing is there seems to be many with no issues. But I agree the lack of response by Garmin is bad customer service.

A related question: Has anyone with F5 who DID have ANT+ problems had the problem fixed by newer firmware versions?

Also, anyone successfully using the Garmin speed and cadence sensors as well as Scosche HRM?

This is actually quite surprising, as garmin used to have one of best customer services....
A related question: Has anyone with F5 who DID have ANT+ problems had the problem fixed by newer firmware versions?

yes/no. I found few dropouts on 2.90 (e.g. 3 XXsec power dropouts on a 2h ride). Then I had few dropouts on a indoor ride on 3.30. But indoor brings different issues, as my neighbour has a wifi router behind the wall, and wifi can interfere with ant+.
Also, anyone successfully using the Garmin speed and cadence sensors as well as Scosche HRM?

    I have 3 configurations:
    1) Garmin speed sensor + Favero BePRO + GarminHRM
    2) Garmin speed/cadence + GarminHRM
    3) Decathlon speed/cadence + Garmin HRM

I cannot identify any serious dropouts. But again, a question - what is the dropout, and how to identify it?
    1) speed sensor dropout = 0 speed on watch or graph, when I was moving => no such dropouts
    2) HR sensor dropout = no HR on watch or graph, when I was still alive => no such dropouts, except when I put my hand on my back (never tried it with prevoius garmin, though)
    3) power/cadence dropout = 0 power or 0 cadence, when I am still pedaling => haven't seen such dropouts now. This however is very difficult to identify, as its impossible to distinguish on the graph, whether it was a dropout, or I just did a pedaling break. Any idea, how to check it?
