Rebooting or Resetting without losing data and settings

Is it not possible to Reboot or Reset the watch without losing data and settings?
I wish there was a way to save all setting and data on the GC so when you upgrade to a different fenix or even have to exchange for some reason, you can just restore everything back. It's a pain to have to go and reconfigure everything all over again.

Is there a way to go to the Garmin folder and save a certain file or files to later copy into the new watch files to make this work?
  • It's funny you should say that...

    Back-up personal setting

You'll lose VO2Max and records but otherwise things should transfer across.
  • Unfortunately you lose a lot more than VO2Max.

Almost all the watch settings, paired sensors and names, customised data screens, customised watch faces, training status/effect, steps, training load, recovery time, performance condition, etc etc. It's not much different to starting from scratch.
  • Then whats the point of making that backup ? Wow, good thing I didn't have time to try it?
  • The point of making it is so that you have a means of restoring settings on your watch should you have to hard/factory reset for any reason.

Setting up a new device is a 'one-off' thing. If you take the time to work through the menu options in the process, you can actually learn a lot about the settings. Once you've got them dialled in, save the relevant files in case you need them.

I think he means what's the point of making a backup if this is true:

  • If I lose my settings , watch faces and things, what is the point of the back up? What I was hoping for is to have some type of back up system like on phones, where it is backed up in a cloud. It would be awesome if GC could do this so it would make restoring personal settings easy.

I know it's asking a lot, but it is a pain to have to go through all this again after it took me some time to get it to my liking.

From the manual: hold LIGHT button for +25s. Then turn it on again.
It will lost the 4hr last HR data, rest will stay. I've tried that. Don't know it will resolve the problem you expected to get rid of by resetting :)

But this is not all true - at least if it's anything like the 920. You get to keep watch settings, paired sensors, customised data screens (not sure about watch faces as I don't use them). These are the settings that take time to re-enter. You also get to keep the different activities you might have set up in the SPORTS and MULTISPORT folders. Yes you will use the performance metrics, but not the rest.

That's why you make a back up.

Also make sure your personal settings are up to date in your profile in GC in the interweb. That way they can be sent to your watch too.

No experience with the 920 but I've reset the F5 twice and tried backing up and replacing every single file I could via USB.
