Fénix 5x screen flickering

Is there anyone who has this little flicker on the screen? Is seen with any type of light (sunlight or indoor) and with the backlight off on the clock. it's a small flickering, but the screen of my fenix3 is completely fix compared with the screen of the fenix 5x

LOL. They probably overclocked the crap out of the processor and our watches will fail in 6 months, but the flickering is gone! (Just kidding) My faint flickering doesn't bother me since I have to produce exact conditions to see it, but glad they may have a fix. And I think a video of the problem must exaggerate the issue because of fps of the vid against the refresh rate of the screen--sort of like seeing computer screens on video with their lines moving top to bottom.

What does "low power mode" mean exactly? Is that anytime I have a white background and backlight is off?

It's the mode it's in most of the time and it applies some restrictions to save power; such as slowing down how quickly it can refresh the screen.

Third party watch faces for example (prior to the current beta of the SDK anyway) could only display seconds during high power mode.

High power mode activates for about 8 seconds when you tilt the watch in a way to suggest you are raising it to look at it and I assume it would be in high power node during activity recording.

Thank you sir! I guess I don't know if I've only seen in low power mode, but I presume so since after leveling the watch it takes me more than 8 seconds to produce the conditions where I see the flickering. Good news in any case. Very curious about how it was hopefully solved by software changes....

Edited to add--hit submit too fast. So do we think this change could impact battery life?
  • On most watches, there's actually two meanings of low power and high power.

The firmware has a low and high power mode. All watchfaces (including the native ones) always run in the firmware's low power mode. Widgets and Apps, the firmware's high power mode.

There's also the Connect IQ low power mode. Again, this happens in the firmware's low power mode.

In CIQ's low power mode, a watchface updates the screen only once a minute (save the battery, as screen updates can be expensive). But based on a gesture, a CIQ watchface will update every second for 10 seconds (it drop's out of CIQ's low power mode)

With the coming "seconds all the time", that's something that happens regardless of if the CIQ watchface is in CIQ's low power or not.

The watchface is able to execute a small bit of code each second (over a minute, it can't exceed an execution average of 30ms each second), and can only update a smaller, specific area of the screen.

Usually, when the firmware/platform folks talk about low and high power, they mean the firmware's low and high power mode, and not the CIQ low power mode.

I've not seen the flicker myself, so I'm not sure if it's the FW's low power mode, or the CIQ low power mode that's referred to with that.

Replacement just arrived and so far, no flickering at all (54G... and it case it comes back, we will have proper 3.42 soon) but that's not everything :

My random accelerometer issue while swimming seems to be fixed.
Connection to the charging cable seems to be stronger than on the previous Watch
Bluetooth range seems to be really good => i was still in the swimming pool, with my phone in a bag 20 meters from there and a few seconds after finishing activity, still in the water, received the message on the watch confirming that i could now see my activity in connect !!!!
    Happy owner :)

Also received my replacement today. Installing some maps and other stuffs at the moment, but a quick look at the screen couldn't reveal any screen flickering. But as you mention, if flickering will appear lets wait for 3.42 that hopefully include a fix for that.

Did you try the newest beta? It didn't work?

Still no flickering on my new replacement watch. But I guess it shows up soon..
