2.90 backlight gesture (in app) bug

Just saw this the other night.

I have backlight "in app" set to gesture, after dark.

Originally it didn't always recognize it. That appeared to be fixed, except it's only half-fixed. It appears the watch is ALSO honoring "Do not disturb" hours when in-app.

No, no, no no and no! It should honor them when in WATCH mode (obviously) but not when in an app. When in an app "DND" hours should be IGNORED!

Otherwise, as soon as DND hours start if you're in an app (e.g. running, at night) your gesture for the backlight becomes inoperative! This also means that if you have other notifies set you won't get them even if in an app.

If I'm in an app DND hours should be ignored. If you started an app you're not sleeping, obviously, and you're doing something where you're alert, awake, and, well, "active".

That's a bug, IMHO. I reported it although I didn't realize it's probably linked to the DND hours when I emailed the report last evening.

Please look into this one Garmin!
  • I Don't think it's a bug, it's just it doesn't work how you want it to. It's just Garmin take Do Not Disturb to mean you don't want to be disturbed. That means it surpresses the backlight. If you want the backlight to work then just turn off DND when you are running.

it's just a priority thing, DND outranks an activity, rather than the other way round (which seems to be what you want)

  • DND *hours* (e.g. when you usually sleep) are set in the Connect app. An explicit DND setting from the watch is ok to override, but "sleeping hours" is definitely not, if you happen to be in an app during that time. Think an Ultra run or similar.

That's silly if you think about it -- you may USUALLY sleep from 9 PM until 6:00 AM, but if you are out skiing and started the app do you really think you'd leave the *APP* running while sleeping? Obviously not.

    This is basic logic.
  • What happens if, whilst you are sleeping, you knock your watch and it starts an activity and the backlight comes on and wakes you?

If you are running an ultra part of the preparation should be to set up the watch so it works how you want. Just turn off DnD.

I can see what your saying, but I can also see Garmins point of view. They chosen to implement it this way and there is an obvious 'fix' you can do to get the watch work as you want it.

I probably want that if I start an app while sleeping ACCIDENTALLY -- otherwise I wind up with a dead watch in the morning.

That's actually kind of hard to do, incidentally.... in the time I owned both the F3 and now the F5x I have never had it happen.
  • in all the time I had a 735 (in which DnD suppresses the backlight as well) I only once started an activity during my DnD period (and found the same behaviour you did).

basically, this behaviour isn't new and Garmin haven't changed it so I doubt they ever will.
