Pace accuracy

I just spent some time reading through (some) of the 55 page "GPS Accuracy" thread. Some of what I'm experiencing is touched on there, but I'm much more concerned about the pace problems I'm having with my F5 than laser-perfect distance accuracy. Specifically, I've noticed that my pace is all over the place during a run, even when I know I'm holding a very steady one. For example, here is the pace data from today's run:

I can understand some minor deviations, but when I'm running for several miles at what I know to be a sub-7 pace and look down at my watch and see "8:40", that's pretty darn frustrating.

Here's what the exact same run looked like two weeks ago with my old FR220:

Totally difference experience. What gives? Do I need to change the GPS settings on the F5 to something other than what comes default?

Is it really true that the 935 provide so much better GPS data? The tracks and distance looks similar to me, it's the pace thats way of. Could it be software related?

FWIW I used a FR610 before (no GLONASS) and the F5 doesn't perform any better in the woods, got shortchanged 140m on a 24km run yesterday. It doesn't do any worse either.
  • I agree that the GPS data seems similar.
I don't know much about these devices as this is my first one but it seems odd that the only real difference between the two devices is the bezel, which a lot of people suggest causes GPS issues. Surely, if it was software related then the 935 would be have similar pace issues?

Just to offer another theory: the weight of the devices is fairly different, too. I've noticed that my 5X slides around my wrist quite a bit as I get sweaty, even when I've tightened the strap a bit. Could be that the weight of the device is causing the antenna in the device to move and judder more than in the 935 with each impact during running, interfering with reception.

It might be, I posted tracks from a ride with my F5S and Edge1000 a couple of days ago and the distance and tracks are spot on. I don't think that would be the case if something is seriously wrong with the GPS...

I wondered about that too. It might also explain better oHR performance of the FR935, although all the evidence of the FR935 performing better vs. F5 is all anecdotal of course, and people who switched from F5 to 935 have confirmation bias.
  • I've just downloaded to give it a try as I'm considering returning my F5 due to the pace (current and the graph on GC) being all over the place.

Does Dozen Run definitely help and smooth things out and provide a more accurate current pace (while running as well as the data shown on GC)?

How many seconds do you have the Rolling Pace set to?

    Thanks.

12sec is ok for me, also when use a FP I put 6 sec or I could do even less. So I am not worried about the pace with this rolling pace, of course, I would like to not need to resort to this algorithm, but I think it is a smaller price to pay to stay with F5. My bigger worry is BT and ANT anthena which seems to have shorter range than F5X. That is worrying!
  • Today I did a litle Intervall Training on a 400m Lap. The Fenix was on 1s GPS, no Glonass.

During the run, the pace showing on the whatch was not very stable, hopping around +-30s/km - but when I now had a Look on Garmin Connect, the pace showing now, is very precise and stable!

On the other side, the OHR was total out of range and the Distanze to - at the end, it was more then 200m to short...

I am not able to upload any file, so here is a Link to the activity:

Well, I have seen the evidence as a non-935 owner and what I have seen (in the form of gps tracks and pace graphs) is the reason I have decided to return my Fenix5, as much as I wanted to love it, and go for the 935...

  • I just bought the Fenix 5 Saturday Nov 4th, after returning my Fenix 3 HR Sapphire I bought on-sale at Costco where the Altimeter was not working correctly even after calibrating etc...and giving crazy readings.
Garmin said they would replace it for me with a factory refurbish but I figured might as well go for the flagship watch Fenix 5.

After plugging in the Fenix 5 I installed the latest software update and the next day I ran a 5km race, the pace was all over from 4:44km/min to 6:10km/min...GPS & GLONASS were both on and 1 second recording. I know my race pace and breathing, also my final time and average pace was 4:50km/min so there is no way there was that amount of fluctuation.
I was extremely disappointed, this is not a cheap GPS smart watch, $799 Canadian dollars...I previously owned the Forerunner 305 and 230 which I never had any problems with my pace tracking going haywire, even in cloudy rainy weather. My race was chipped time and I ran a PR so luckily at least I have that on Sportsats.
I also wanted to love it but after seeing so many others having issues I realize mine is not the only lemon. I'm returning it tonight and also going for the 935. I will report back my results...also my V02max went from 47 down to 41 after running a PR!
I just want to get back to having proper pace tracking during my runs. I can do without all the other bells and fancy whistles. :(

That sounds just like a Fenix5!

Forerunner 935 so far after 3 weeks is excellent, I ran my 1st half marathon with it on Nov 12th and it tracked as expected!
No crazy pace fluctuations either, elevation was good as well...very happy so far. :o
I also like how it fits and its much lighter, too bad it doesn't come with sapphire glass...
