Altimeter Fenix 5

This morning, as I always do, I drove 22 miles to work in the North west of England. According to several websites there is a difference in altitude between my start and finish points of circa 220 feet, the altimeter on my Fenix 5 shows no difference in altitude at any time in the last 4 hours. Is there a setting that I have wrong or is it a faulty unit?

I've had the watch less than a week so haven't noticed this before, so I don't know if this is the first occasion or whether or not the unit has been showing different altitudes previously.

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

  • I had my Fenix 5 Sapphire for 3 months (purchased from REI) and last weekend the altimeter suddenly went crazy (like so many are reporting here); I suspect electrical discharge, since whatever I touched that day (a very dry and cold day), I saw sparks. Instead of 3000 ft I suddenly was at 18000ft according to the Fenix 5 and when outdoors, hiking up it actually showed going down by 1000s of ft....I completely wiped it and let it sit turned off over night; the next day it showed the correct altitude for about 1-2 hrs and then went crazy again...I was on FW 8.0 all the time, btw (but do not think it has anything to do with that); I finally gave up and was lucky that REI accepted the return - I took a new FR 935 instead (and some money back), since there are very few issues reported for that device; Not as classy looking, but not ugly either (and very light; I practically do not notice it). Bluetooth range much improved (from 5m to >10m; but the 5m was ok); Let's see how it fares in the months to come...Garmin really needs to get their act together for the Fenix 6 - an outdoor watch that breaks because of static discharge from clothes etc is not acceptable;
  • I work in a very dry and static prone environment. Electrical is our source of heat, unfortunately, which only adds to the static electricity issue.

    Not only does the static affect my altimeter functions but I am also a strong believer that it has killed the LCD on 2 out of my 3 Fenix 5 watches so far.

    I bought Fenix 5 3 weeks ago. I always had to calibrate the altimeter every day but I got a good height data every hike. Today, with no apparent reason, non static electricity, non storm, etc. the altimeter is going crazy, it has gone from 12 meters at home up to 250 meters in five minutes without moving at all and still increasing. Could you help me? I cant understan so an expensive watch with so many important issues. I think the hardware is not bad but the software is awful. Thanks.
  • Brand new (2nd replacement Fenix 5) says I am a mile high in Baltimore - should be more like 50-100 feet above sea level. I think there is a problem - this one is not flaking out though - my first one was most stable but flaked out (went to 65K). Second one was always going to -50k then —-. This one takes me on a mountain climb peaking at 7300 feet so it is less flaky but not as consistent as the first.

    But you didn't calibrate it?
  • Calibrated multiple times - when the ambient pressure is like 700 mb when it should be around 900-1020 I know it is glitching ... but not as bad as replacement #1

    i just removed all of the connect Iq watch faces to see if it starts to stabilize.

    I am in a hospital where the door handles give static shocks ...
  • Well, if you already know that your ambient pressure measurement is off, you are wasting your time looking at altitude. Altitude will never be right if your ambient pressure measurement is wrong.
  • Do i win anything for this...:eek::D
    Watch is a bit of a joke...auto pause on hiking and walking does not restart when i move off again even when set to pause when stopped..

  • Oh above was the watch at my home at 225ft above sea level:rolleyes:
  • Hello all, I made my homework with Fenix 5. After claiming - bellow link - mentioned issues, Garmin.CZ returned watches as OK, claim rejected (mainly checked air pressure sensor and keep watches on one place). So, since one week, I collected state of watches and want to share with you. Today, second week ends, and the watches are totaly out of correct values - still going from + 20K meters to even -38K meters (currently in 19404 m a.s.l., pressure 422,8 hPa - today air pressure in Brno/Czechia 1019 hPa).
    Same as you, I paied a lot of money for this negative experience, still hope the seller will exchange them... But when I read previous post, not sure, if this is a cure.
