Question about the temperature reading displayed under activity in Garmin Connect

Where is the watch getting the temperature line you see in the full page listing of an activity? Is that your body temperature? What do you learn from or how do you use this information?

Thanks for any information!
  • It's the watch temperature sensor. It is mainly used to adjust the reading from the barometric altimeter.

It does reflect your body temp when you are wearing the watch, but to be honest it is only indicative and not really your skin temp or body temp.

Thanks! I am so happy with this toy, I could squeal.

So it´s kind of useless, isn´t it?
  • So it´s kind of useless, isn´t it?

Yup, as an absolute measure. You can look at it relatively to help make sense of elevated HR at same pace for example, but other than that basically useless.
  • Yesterday I was doing a workout in a room that was too hot and humid for me. My heart rate was low just because I wasn't able to function in that heat. And then someone turned on the fans, and my heart rate went up because I was able to work harder.

All of that to say, there was some correlation between my heart rate and the temperature line in the activity list. Just an interesting factoid, I guess and no real significance?
  • Massively significant because understanding how you are affected by heat and humidity gives you the ability to adjust how you train or race under those conditions.
  • If you want more accurate temperature, you can use a Tempe sensor. Data from it will be used when you record an activity instead of the internal sensor.
  • Very accurate on the swimming pool

    Hello,

I found it very acurrate on swimming pool. Important to me to know how good I can deal with different water temperatures.

    Best regards,

    Antonio
  • I put this watch on my bike mount only when I go cycling. It would be more accurate of the ambient temp, I hope.
  • Depends on whether it's sunny out. I use an Edge 1000 for cycling. When it's cloudy, the temperature is accurate. When it's sunny, the fact that it's a tiny greenhouse comes into play and the temperature it shows is above the actual temperature. If you stop with an Edge on your handlebars on a sunny day, you'll definitely see a temperature spike.
